I just had a folder of photos I needed to compress into a zip to upload somewhere. I assumed I’d have the option in right click menu, but can’t see any compress/zip options. I hope it isn’t terminal only, is it?! Or do I need to install something to get that functionality?
thanks
you could install ‘ark’
In KDE, I can choose “compress” when clicking right, and among others, I can then choose zip. Additionally, I have ark to do it manually (without terminal). I am not sure what desktop you use?
In case you use GNOME (= Fedora Workstation): I have no Fedora Workstation (GNOME) myself, but I am quite sure there is something comparable when clicking right in nautilus (I think now the file manager is called “GNOME Files”). If not, I think the dedicated tool that used to be the GNOME default for file compression is “GNOME Archive Manager”, formerly known as file roller. If right click does not offer related options, you might check if File Roller or GNOME Archive Manager are installed, and if necessary, install them.
I suggest to add information about what desktop you use (if you use “Fedora Workstation”, it is GNOME). Additionally, you might add the tag to the topic title (e.g., kde or workstation )
With gnome file manager (nautilus) the right click on the folder provides an option to compress and that brings up a popup where you select how to compress the folder contents.
ive just been using the “zip” command
Thanks everyone. Sorry, yes I am on Gnome. I don’t understand this at all but I now have the right click option. I searched high and low before but couldn’t see it (for files OR folders). Very strange, the only thing I can imagine is that I was in some sort of file dialogue, rather than the Files app itself. I have no other ideas why I couldn’t see it, except perhaps there was a bug and updates solved it, as I’ve run all updates since posting this thread.
Thanks anyway, looks like I am good to go
Ah yes, nautilus and missing right click actions.
But that should for sure be there
(Btw, it is there on KDE, come to the kool side ;D)
Ha, that’s weird, but I’ve actually looked at KDE recently for a few key reasons, one being the Desktop functionality. I know I know! I’ve heard all the arguments, and I definitely don’t want to debate them here. Suffice to say, desktop functionality is good for me, doesn’t cause any issues with organisation as i know it does for most users, and living without it is quite painful for me after year of using Desktop organised folder for specific (temporary, sometimes months though) purposes.
I believe KDE can give me back the dinosaur look to my desktop?!
I think most KDE devs use single click and dont have icons on the desktop, but they still implement the opposite. Thats basically the essence of KDE
Sorry, didn’t understand a word of that!
Please open a new topic in the watercooler because this one seems to be solved.
The more posts are added here and the more the topic gets blurred, the more it becomes confusing for other users in ask.fedora who have similar issues and thus end up here.
If you opened a new topic in the watercooler, you are of course free to link it here. I am currently on email so I cannot create topics / move posts myself.
