I installed Fedora 41 on a new system.
Installation ran fine. Kernel is 6.11.4-301.fc41.x86_64.
Restarted the system but it hangs.
The problem I can only boot the rescue kernel.
I updated the system which installed a new kernel 6.11.11-300.fc41.x86_64.
Restarted the system but it hangs with the new kernel.
Even now I can only boot the rescue kernel.
uname -a shows:
Linux odin 6.11.4-301.fc41.x86_64 #1 SMP PREEMPT_DYNAMIC Sun Oct 20 15:02:33 UTC 2024 x86_64 GNU/Linux
I have no idea how to fix this.
You haven’t provided a description of your hardware.
One of systems (old iMac) goes to a blackscreen for over a minute while booting with no signs of activity. Try waiting several minutes. Does the keyboard CapsLock light respond? Can you get a text console with <Ctrl-Alt-F3>
? You may be able to see an error message by booting in text mode:
- first, use the grub editor to remove the
rhgb quiet
from the kernel command line - if you see the reason for the “hang” use the grub editor to add a
<space>
character at the end of the kernel command line followed by a3
If that doesn’t lead you to the solution, we will need more information. Please post the output from running inxi -Fzxx
in a terminal (as pre-formatted text using the </>
button from the top line of the text entry panel). This provides an overview of your hardware in a form that can be found with a web search and may allow others who have experienced the issue with the same hardware suggest a solution.
Thanks for your assistance.
- I removed “rhgb quiet” from /etc/default/grub. I don’t get any output.
- shows where it hangs at:
11.747384] wlo1: Limiting TX power to 30 (30 - 0) dBm as advertised by 2c:08:23:c9:4c:91

I hope this is okay
I have to precise:
I can boot to the kernel 6.11.4-301.fc41.x86_64.
Booting kernel 6.11.11-300.fc41.x86_64 make the system hanging and turning.
Same here on Dell Latitude 7640 with Fedora 41, upgrading kernel to 6.11.11 from 6.11.10 or after fresh Fedora install breaks system.

Two different systems, both with Intel Iris Xe graphics, but only one shows “Display” using the “xe” driver.
The next step (after getting no useful data with rhgb quiet
removed and attempting to boot to a text console by adding a 3 to the kernel command line) is to boot a working kernel and check for more details from a boot that failed with journalctl
in a terminal. Linux collects a massive level of detail that mostly ends up in journalctl
, so it takes some effort to isolate the details relevant to a given issue. man journalctl
explains command-line options to select a boot number, filter for strings and priority, and more. Xe
is an unfortunate name as “xe” appears in may linux journalctl entries. If you are not comfortable with the linux command liine, I recommend Linux Command. Beware of click-bait sites promising easy solutions to linux problems – there has been a big increase in such sites using AI-generated content.
I didn’t know where to add 3 to the kernel command line ?
So maybe I could do so when I know how.
Basically, system boots to multiuser level but freezes on manual gdm load. Or system hangs on graphical boot

I did journalctl >boot.txt
I try to find the information about the boot failure.
If I have no success I could provide a link to that file.
Is that possible ?
Just lists the details from all boots. Please read man journalctl
with a aim to selecting a relevant boot and then the pertinent entries (if any – sometimes system crashes without leaving details).
Here the link to the extract from journalctl

Here is a more recent one from today.

I have the exact same Issue here, already made a Post before I found this one. But haven’t had any luck so far and no responses. Link: Fresh Fedora Install - Freeze during boot Kernel 6.11.11, Stuttering on 120hz Laptop and Camera doesn't work
Update:
When booting and opening the Command Lines to see what’s going on, I found that my System Crashes always at the Same Line:
[21.973412] wlp0s20f3: Limiting TX Power to 30 (30 - 0)dBm as advertised by a0:b5:49:6d:bf:80
I hope this can help for the Problem solving
I mentioned the same issue at the beginning of my questioning:
It hangs at:
11.747384] wlo1: Limiting TX power to 30 (30 - 0) dBm as advertised by 2c:08:23:c9:4c:91
Who may tell what the heck this means ?
Is 2c:08:23:c9:4c:91
the address of the WiFi router?
Since txpower errors are probably related to the WiFi router’s transmission power advertised to clients, you could try one the following:
- Remove all your saved wireless networks and reboot;
- Turn off the router/AP before booting, and turn it on after the reboot;
- Increase the transmission power on the router/AP, in case there is such an option;
- Tweak the transmission power of the interface by decreasing or increasing it, with
iw dev wl01 set txpower limit <someValueOtherThan30>
.
It has to be mentioned that I haven’t tested any of these, since I have no such issues. Hopefully one of the above is helpful in troubleshooting.
iw dev wlo1 set txpower limit 50
results in
command failed: Operation not supported (-95)
I set the older kernel to default for booting up.
Maybe the next kernel upgrade will work…
I have the same problem with my new dell xps13 9315 (intel i5 12th gen), but not with my old HP workstation (intel i7 4th gen). Anyhow, use grubby to change the default kernel entry [1]. For example:
igor@fedora:~$ sudo grubby --info=ALL
[sudo] password for igor:

[1] Chapter 7. Making persistent changes to the GRUB boot loader | Red Hat Product Documentation
I used grubby already to change the default kernel.
Works fine.
How can I do that? so I can at least use the 6.11.4 Kernel to boot
