Fedora hangs on boot after upgrading to kernel 6.3.4

Hello everyone,

New Fedora user here - I just updated my Fedora 38 workstation system to the latest kernel available (6.3.4) and installed all the other needed update packages via the GNOME software program. When the system finished installing the kernel and other packages and rebooted, it sent me to the GRUB screen. When I selected kernel 6.3.4 to boot, the system hung on a black screen with only an underscore (_) visible. I attempted to reboot the system with the new kernel several times but it hung every time. However, when I selected the previous kernel (6.2.15) in GRUB, the system booted normally (I am typing this post on the system in question while running kernel 6.2.15 now).

I am unsure if something became corrupted during the update process or if there is another issue, but I would appreciate any help in getting my system to boot on kernel 6.3.4 since the 6.2 kernel series is EOL.

If this information helps, my system is a Dell Inspiron 3891 desktop. Here is the output from fpaste -

Does the system have a GPU?

I’ve seen boot hangs with underscore display when a nouveau update was missed, so the underscore screen may signal a graphics driver issue. Can you get a console with <ctrl-alt 3>? Have you checked journalctl -b [6.3_boot_#]?

You could try editing the grub kernel command-line to remove rhgb quiet and watching for error messages.

Just for the record: we have a comparable report in bodhi (where we i. a. collect results from kernel testers) [1].

The reporter in bodhi has an Intel 12th-gen i5, while you have Intel 11th-gen i5. This does not automatically imply that both of you have the same (Intel-related) issue, but it is one possibility.

[1] https://bodhi.fedoraproject.org/updates/FEDORA-2023-514965dd8a

Also, when you paste such information (code, logs, terminal output, and so on) please mark all of it and click the </> button before posting. This makes such content much more comprehensible.

I have currently not much time to invest, but in the worst case (if you do not get the issue managed in this topic), stick with the working kernel you have. 6.3.5 is already in testing. Maybe it will solve your issue. In any case, we would appreciate if you would let us know here if the next update to 6.3.5 makes a difference once it is released (so does it solve the issue or not; or in case you get the issue solved here, if the next update does re-create the problem).

Following latest upgrade at about 9 am 1 June 2023 Australian Eastern std time boot fails with kernel 6.3.4-201.

Hangs after grub next displayed line I think was Boot Command line … then hangs. Rhgb & quiet removed, hangs not display.

One possibility intiramfs has no nvme driver? My system boot efi via ssd then nvme roofs due to board Intel W2600cr efi being early board and while latest efi upgrade installed to 2018 no nvme driver in efi.

Managed to boot on 2 grub kernel: Linux earth 6.2.15-300.fc38.x86_64 #1 SMP PREEMPT_DYNAMIC Thu May 11 17:37:39 UTC 2023 x86_64 GNU/Linux

In sysinfo did note noveau issues. I am aware of the faulty disk shown. Not used still needs to be removed.

Xorg.0.log seems to suggest problem with nvidia?

Unable to do anything re kernel 6.3.4-201. Completely hangs from grub selection even thought I only have rghb in command line. Quiet only removed due to use of encryption.

Need guidance to obtain further debug info to establish boot issue???

Appears same issue as rairai9

Trying upload sysinfo dump not sure how can’t find an upload link as I type this

Newbie in using this website – sorry. Did some reading about this but nothing found re upload file?

JUst going through jounalctl for June 01 have initial boot from 6.2.15 does upgrade but no journalctl logs re boot fail of 6.3.4. Only shows logs when I go and boot grub line #2 for the past most recent kernel.

I need assistance to upload and guidance to help ID boot problem on upgrade.

Will endeavour to remove rhgb next boot attempt with 6.3.4. I think I tried that and got nothing. Just hangs. Will try again and confirm.

Hi George,

Thanks for replying so soon - my system does not have a dedicated GPU and only uses integrated Intel graphics (Intel UHD Graphics 730). I can pull up journalctl on a console but I only see information from the current boot - I tried using journalctl -b [6.3_boot_#] but the console tells me that this is an invalid argument - I’m not sure how to modify the argument to pull up info for when I tried to boot with the newer kernel.

In the meantime I removed rhgb quiet from the grub kernel command-line and will let you know if any error messages appear when I try to reboot with the newer kernel.

Thanks for your help!

Hi Chris,

Thanks for your reply - I edited my original post to reformat the terminal output so it’s easier to read. Thanks for the tip!

The reporter in bodhi does sound like they’re having a similar issue. I will stick with kernel 6.2.15 for the time being and let you know here if anything changes once 6.3.5 is released.

Thanks for your help!

@rairai9 @rkoppelh generally, often such issues are solved just by
skipping one kernel in between. Also, a kernel maintainer is watching
the bodhi reports. However, they have a lot of work and cannot always
consider all reports immediately.

If you want to support them and increase the likelihood that the issue
is solved as soon as possible (in case the next kernel does not solve
the issue), you could create a bug report.

If you want to do that, please file a bug at https://bugzilla.redhat.com
→ some documentation can be found at
How to file a bug :: Fedora Docs (you
do not need to create a bugzilla account but you can use your account
from here by logging in to Bugzilla using the “Fedora Account System”).

Please file the bug against the product “Fedora” and the component
“kernel”. If you have chosen kernel, you will get a template that is
specific for kernel bug reports. Please read this template carefully and
provide the data it asks for (which also includes creating a file with
some relevant logs; the template contains the command to get it). Also,
please add both the link to here and to the related bodhi page (the one
I provided above) and let them know that such an issue appears already
at multiple users.

If something is unclear or so, feel free to ask me here.

Once done, you can share the link to the bug report here.

Maybe developers will ask for further information after you submitted
the report: if you need help with providing the requested information,
also feel free to ask here.

Thanks!

Chris

Additionally concerning the bug report, I forgot to mention: please
mention if you use nvidia driver and at the best, add the output of cat /proc/sys/kernel/tainted (I think this is already asked in the template
but I do not know for sure off the cuff)

For the record those finding this thread.

This morning via grub attempted boot via grub and ensured rhgb and quiet deleted from command line:

Outcome:
Booting a command list

Then nothing.

Only other thing of note is disk light regularly flashing at around 1 sec intervals as if boot is stuck in a loop.

6.2.15 boots fine though from infostat I note nvidia issues I wasn’t aware. I did notice once we went to 6.2.x, that logging into Plasma xorg is impossible. Refuses to login. Can only login with Plasma wayland. Seperate issue I assume? BUt that’s usually the cause of tainted kernel. All apps are from the standard repos other the rpmfusion re audio and nvidia drivers. I try top not taint the kernel and while Fedora ideology is utopian, in the real world Nvidia runs the desktop world and the xorg/wayland transition has not been smooth re nvidia cards. Not laying blame on ANYONE. Just noting.

Proceeding to submit bug report for which I’ll add a link to this thread when submitted.

$ cat /proc/sys/kernel/tainted
516

A short comment to tainted=516: I expect you have nvidia driver. If so,
add the information to any bug report. Usually, only kernel issues with
tainted=0 are considered, but since a lot of people use and rely on
nvidia, this is usually considered and handled despite tainted being not 0.

in my case of 6.3.4 boot hang, it was just to grub menu construction failure, presumably during install of kernel package.

        echo 'Loading initial ramdisk ...'
        initrd /initramfs-6.2.15-300.fc38.x86_64.img
}

The older kernel has it’s ramdisk directive, but the new one has the kernel directive with no initrd directive.

manually running sudo grub2-mkconfig -o /boot/grub2/grub.cfg while booted in to the old kernel then correctly regenerated the grub config.
I can now boot the new kernel fine.

Sadly my autohide was enabled. Your post made me realise from diagnostic point of view that may not be a good idea as may grub.cfg does not contain the menuentry items you have.

But I will rework my grub2-mkconfig when a I get a chance. Either nvme driver load was a problem or as you point out grub construction issue which my grub.cfg as setup may not show.

How can I check where my taints are?

I do yum ‘priorities’ to prevent this but F38 may have moved on that this does not work. It should only be nvidia drivers but some of my audio and other multimedia codecs (workstation after all) from rpmfusion maybe culprits.

In infostat I did notice odd Nvidia messages I wasn’t aware off that I need to investigate. A curious impact of F38 upgrade a month ago was that Login is impossible with Plasma xorg setting. Can only login on Plasma wayland. But still find wayland a bit unstable with nvidia getting occasional freezes with F36 as well. That’s why xorg and proprietary drivers. That’s rock solid.

I filed a bug report with my fpaste output and the output from cat /proc/sys/kernel/tainted (which returned a value of 0). I also added the link to this discussion as well as the bodhi page. I will keep you updated with any developments. Thanks!

I actually also raised a bug report with sadly my tainted kernel. We’ll see what happens.

RH review suggest problem with nvidia driver?

I will try grub update and then nvidia kernel update when I get a chance.

@rairai9 Please provide a link to your bug report.

We should link the two reports to avoid additional work and to enable
developers to have all related data together. That fosters problem solving.

Here is the link to my bug report - 2212012 – Fedora 38 workstation hangs on boot after upgrading to kernel 6.3.4

When filing the report, I wasn’t asked to provide any specific logs, but I included my system’s output from fpaste --sysinfo --printonly and cat /proc/sys/kernel/tainted as an attachment.

I would be happy to provide any other logs or other system info if needed. Thanks!
