I would like to ask for a #uk tag in project discussion.
At the moment we have very big topics in which a lot of stuff comes together and in which the UK SIG and Local London Meetup people have to organize themselves (there is no tag the UK / London people can subscribe to, which further forces us to use chained & blurred long topics).
The current examples are
This is nothing urgent, and not super critical as well of course, but it would definitely foster UK SIG / Local London Meetup activities.
@mattdm it ain’t urgent, but would it be ok to create a tag #uk or #uk-sig ?
It would be quite useful to organize our UK SIG and the Local London Meetups, and to keep people and topics together (e.g., for subscribing to the tag and such).
I just started the topic for the 3rd Local London meetup and experienced again that there ain’t suitable tags.
I get why do you want it, but I think SIG it’s not the right name for teams grouping by location. Even when the SIG definition is kind of loose but it’s usually a team around a common topic, but not around a location, I think it’s a great idea to start to check how to regroup teams. In the past, I know that Ambassadors where group by regions:
Latam
Emea
NA
APAC
If this team is about ambassadors, on any of their categories, I think it would be the best to start with the EMEA group, and then, if it doesn’t exists anymore, then proceed with a local team, Fedora Ambassadors UK.
If it’s not the case about the team being ambassadors or doing ambassadors related tasks, then we can try to come up with an idea on how to start calling the team.
Maybe it’s just me, and just sharing my thoughts
As far as I know, we don’t envisage becoming Ambassador group. We started with meetup in London and hope to grow active participants. Some say it could be user group. We haven’t rigidly defined it.
There had been several topics and discussions about that project (I think mostly in 2024, but I think some already in 2023), and mindshare was also involved as we got some support from them in the beginning. It ended up with the London Meetup being one event that includes (but is not equal to) the UK SIG. This distinction also indicates the fact that this SIG is not limited to a location but it is much more than that. You would need to read the preceding & related topics (I admit, there had been several since this has started) and related communications (in the UK-matrix channel, tickets, etc) to get into everything because it would be offtopic to now re-elaborate all that in here:
As Hank already said, we ain’t ambassadors and currently, things go into a quite different direction. So let’s keep this topic focused about having a tag or not, or of course what tag.
Personally, I don’t care if it is #uk or #uk-sig , or something else that is dedicated. but #uk-sig was following the pattern of Project Discussions. The tag is thus not just for the London Meetup, although it would be very helpful to support that too.
However, if there are doubts or reservations in the community about introducing such tags, I can understand it, and it’s fine to limit tagging to the way it currently is, such a tag is not a game changer that is worth discomfort or so.
At the moment, we have much to organize and coordinate. Please do not make us re-opening that topic and investing time in discussing the naming.
I do agree on having a tag to help organize the team.
I have, and I’m sure nobody have, doubts about introducing tags.
I’m not trying to.
To be completely clear, I’m just looking for the right naming of the team, nothing more. Indeed I’m very happy to see new teams coming together! But at least at my eyes, and I’m nobody to make any decision, team are like described here, but after re reading it, I think that SIG suits the best for you. Also you will be the first location based SIG, and that’s a good thing too!
Let’s wait for @mattdm to create the tag. And congrats for the effort and great work
No worries. I just want to use the time I contribute at the moment as efficient as possible, and try to avoid things that can cause confusion in “the mid of the race”.
I am to set something up in Zurich, maybe it will develop something intertwined with London. More would be great, and interconnecting them even more, feel free to open a topic if you seek support or have questions. There are many Germans here that might be interested. In UK, we have reached out to openSuSE and others to make it an event with higher outreaches among communities and research.
The categories should be limited as they mark the information the readers (and newcomers) get immediately at their first impression. This should thus remain as little as possible to remain comprehensible and not overwhelm them. Also, I don’t think we need that: it’s a Project Discussion imho.
We could also consider a “sub-tag” structure — that is, #uk-sig only becomes available once you’ve first selected the #local-groups tag. That’s not very discoverable, though, and I think is probably more suitable for announcements and such.
I think we should go ahead with #uk-sig, and if we get a number of other active groups, we can easily create a category and move things. (URLs don’t include either tags or category, so that’s not a big deal.)
FWIW, I think we probably should avoid the corporate divisions into EMEA, LATAM, APAC, NA. They don’t really reflect “natural” communities — for example Australia, India, Thailand, Japan, and Kyrgyzstan are kinda different.
