Local meetup London on 26 February 2024: please reply to topic to confirm attendance

won’t show up with my partner this time, as i will go back to Sweden in February, might show up to something else another time when i am in England

How about making this event as hybrid, so you can join in by Matrix video call?

As January is the kick off month for business and many are still AFK in early January, I would wait for a couple of days for logistics and prep for hybrid event.

We will agree on duration of event, time and how to join event with Jitsi in Matrix.

I got a small external microphone to connect to phone camera, so it should capture live sound much better than built-in speakers of laptop or phone.

might be able to join then if its 7th February, at 6th February i am back at dayjob/work

Should I set up one of them whenisgood/doodle things so we can fix a date? It’ll keep getting pushed otherwise

Doodle or such is a good idea. It might help to identify the dates that
fit the majority.

I expect that I can roughly predict my schedule for the first quarter of
2024 by 12th or 13th January, maybe earlier.

I think a meeting poll is a great idea.

Also, I am not 100% sure about it yet, but I think the Red Hat London office location would have video conferencing hardware available that works best with Google Meet. Google Meet is not FOSS of course, but it may be a struggle to use Jitsi with the existing video conferencing hardware available in Red Hat offices. Just floating that out there.

6 or 7 Feb work for me. We are expecting ;whenisgood’ poll soon. If others prefer different week, Thursdays or Fridays PM/evenings are good, overall.

Hi All,

Sorry, I can’t make it during the workday since I’ve got a new job and I’m not in London now. But I’m totally free in the evenings and on weekends. I get that it might not work with the office hours, but just wanted to throw it out there.

Thanks for your heads up. Do you know when RH office closes? If Innovation lab has longer opening time, it may be worth trying for the option.

That’ll be wonderful. Thanks for your help.

I just had some time, so I set up a doodle poll.

I think we have already agreed to evening, so I just asked for the day. Also, a free account only allows up to 20 poll possibilities (for the same reason I could not add the 29th).

Feel free to also add your terminal preference to your nickname, maybe that will help us to indicate where to locate events in future:

The meeting will be in the evening! If you have a preference, you might add to your nickname your preferred area around a major terminal (so to roughly identify major preferences for the future): P = Paddington, W = Waterloo, E = Euston/Kings Cross/St.Pancras , L = Liverpool Street, V = Victoria, L = London Bridge → e.g., “py0xc3 P”

I have not yet considered the possibility for events outside London (it seems we have some people in the area west/south-west of London.

To avoid confusions: the username “py0xc3” in the poll is only the name to set up the possibilities for the poll. My own availabilities are those of the username “py0xc3 W,V,P

The dates that I have marked as (x) / yellow are those dates where I expect that I will be available but at which there is still some chance that another appointment will be scheduled (the earlier we have a decision, the better are the chances that I can keep available at the chosen date, especially in the case of the (x) / yellow dates).

Looking forward to meet you in February

If all went well, you’re already in the UK?
Thanks for helping out. I sent my available dates.

I believe we will meet up at a RH premise, so I forgot to add terminal. Meeting at an office reduces many variables.

Yes, I will commute a little in the subsequent months between Germany and UK, but I am currently in Egham

While we are waiting for a date to be confirmed, I want to ask what common goal we think about. In other words, what would you like to get out of this meetup?

At the end of our first meetup, we should be able to pencil in next meetup - yearly or half-yearly.

Please share your thoughts on the meetup and what you want to do.

I forgot to mention: Since I could choose only 20 possibilities (limitation of free doodle accounts), I did not add the dates of weekends. Generally, I would be fine also on weekends, but I expected that the majority prefers to meet Mo-Fri anyway?

If there is interest, I can create a second poll to also consider the weekends (and the 29th). Both polls together would then cover the whole February. Let me know, I will have some time tomorrow anyway.

Thanks for setting up the doodle, I’ve filled it in now!

I was thinking about this too. It’ll be good to have a deliverable/artefact/some concrete work to show?

How about:

  • we write a short blurb about our contribution areas in Fedora
  • we note what we think we can help others learn
  • we note what we’d like to learn
  • we note where we’d like help, any specific tasks, for example, and how urgent they are

Based on this, we can hopefully find overlaps b/w the skills we are collectively able to share and want to learn? So maybe we can have a mix of tutorials + tasks that we work on together?

For example:

  • I help out with packaging, a little bit of docs writing, with onboarding at the Join SIG, and with troubleshooting here and in the Matrix channels
  • I’m a packager sponsor, so I can help folks learn packaging. I can help folks learn how to write docs—the workflow. I can explain how the Join SIG onboarding system is currently set up. And, I can give a quick “howto” on debugging/troubleshooting steps that I commonly use.
  • I’d like to learn more about docs, and other packaging related teams where I may be able to help out.
  • We can use lots of help with Neuro-SIG packages, and of course, the quick-docs can always use help. More people hanging out in the Fedora Join channels to file new “welcome to Fedora” tickets that starts the process for newcomers would be helpful too.

And finally, I think it’s fair to expect that we’ll all write short “reports” on our blogs about what we did. It’s a good way of reviewing the event, and making some noise about it to encourage more community members to do these too.

Yes, i think weekdays after work is probably best. Hard to take time off from “life” things on weekends

Evenings on weekdays work for me. Weekends are full of family commitments and resting for the week after

That was my thought as well when I had to choose 20 days of February in doodle  Thus I focused on weekdays. Let’s keep it then with the existing doodle without weekends for now. It seems we have already days that people have in common anyway

Shall we agree on a deadline for the doodle and fix it here? Maybe 18th January? I guess one week should be sufficient for everyone to determine & decide. It might be helpful if people can fix the appointment in their schedule early, so that the remaining February can be allocated otherwise or so.

18th Jan sounds good for a deadline. :+1:
