Helpful Guide To Help You Get Started With Your Outreachy 2024 Project

Good morning everyone and welcome.
I thought of listing out some steps to follow :

STEP 1: CREATE YOUR FEDORA ACCOUNT SYSTEM(FAS)
Complete your profile.
You should have your profile username,
and also your OPENID which looks like this https://username.id.fedoraproject.org/
where username should be replaced with the username you set. You will find more details about the FAS in the discussion channel.

STEP 2: PLEASE INTRODUCE YOURSELF ON THE PUBLIC PROJECT CHAT: FEDORA CHAT (MATRIX) –
You can either create your own account or use a Fedora-provided account on chat.fedoraproject.org (NOTE, this requires you to already have an account on accounts.fedoraproject.org).

  1. If you signup for matrix on your own, then your matrix chat link will be @username:matrix.org. To input this in your FAS account, write out the full link excluding the “@” sign e.g username.matrix.org
  2. If you signup for matrix using a Fedora-provided account, then your matrix chat link will be @username:fedora.im

Note: Replace “username “with your matrix username.
Once you have a Matrix account, join the Fedora Project space(right there on matrix) and these rooms below to connect with the Fedora community and the Marketing Team:

  1. #fedora-space:fedoraproject.org
  2. #mentoring:fedoraproject.org
  3. #marketing:fedoraproject.org

STEP 3: INTRODUCE YOURSELF IN THE CHANNELS AND DISCUSSION CHANNEL. Outreachy 2024 kick-off! Mentors & applicants, introduce yourself here!
Follow the steps in the discussion channel to the letter.

• Also watch the #mentored-projects-team tag 1 on Fedora Discussion
You can view the general welcome message by Justin W. Flory: Welcome Outreachy 2024 applicants! - Fedora Discussion (fedoraproject.org)

STEP 4: CREATE A GITLAB ACCOUNT IF YOU DON’T HAVE ONE.
If you run into SSL issues like me on Gitlab, you can find this resource really helpful.

Adding SSL to GITLAB. Follow this guide at: https://www.theserverside.com/blog/Coffee-Talk-Java-News-Stories-and-Opinions/How-to-configure-GitLab-SSH-keys-for-secure-Git-connections

STEP 5: GO TO GITLAB CONTRIBUTION PAGE AND LOOK FOR GOOD FIRST ISSUES.

STEP 6: Don’t sleep on our orientation call this Friday:
• Start: Fri, March 08, 2024 - 17:00 UTC
• End: Fri, March 08, 2024 - 18:00 UTC

Thanks for this great guide @kofocole!

I have one more suggestion. Don’t forget to add your time zone and Matrix ID to your FAS account. Doing this will let you participate with the chat bots we use in our contributor Matrix rooms. You can do that here, on your profile page.

I explained in one of the chat rooms the other day about how Fedora contributors have “karma cookies” to give and get thanks from each other. These virtual cookies are acknowledgements that we make to another Fedora contributor when they do something good and helpful. We have them because sometimes it is easy to get caught up in the busyness of working, that we don’t always share our gratitude and thanks when someone does something good and helpful. Karma cookies in Fedora is one way we address that in our community, to make it easier to say “thanks!” and “good job!” to each other. :slightly_smiling_face:

But here is the catch. Every contributor can give another contributor only one cookie per release (i.e. every six months). You can always give more, but only the first one each release is counted.

To give and get karma cookies, you must link your Matrix ID to your account in the Fedora Account System (link above). Once you do that, the chat bot will know who you are in Matrix. Then, you can give cookies in one of three ways:

  • Add “++” to the person’s Fedora username. e.g. jflory7++
  • Add “++” to the person’s Matrix ID. @jflory7 ++
  • Emoji react to their message with the :cookie: emoji. Actually, try it! If @zodbot:fedora.im is in the room, that person will get a cookie after you give the emoji reaction.
