GNOME Web resource intensive

I would like to use GNOME Web (aka epiphany) for browsing, for its tighter integration with the DE. I could live with it being less feature-rich than Firefox (don’t need the plugins and extra features).

However, I noticed it is more resource intensive than Firefox (RAM, CPU), the laptop’s fan works quite often, and the browser is sometimes “not responding”. Scrolling is not that smooth either.

Are these issues common, maybe WebKit dependent, or is the software maybe not robust enough yet?

The fact that Firefox is the default browser might be related to these issues as well (besides popularity, plugins, DRM support)?
