Fedora workstation randomly hard-freezing out of completely nowhere

New user here. I’ve installed fedora about 2 or 3 days ago, but out of completely nowhere I’ve been getting these random hard freezes that never go away. They occur randomly (at least an hour or two of the laptop being open) and I have to completely shut down my laptop by holding the power button. During the freeze itself if I try to press the caps lock button it turns no but its very delayed and sometimes it doesn’t even work, if I have any audio playing for the first second or two of the freeze it still plays but then completely cuts out and / or plays very very choppily. I have no idea how to troubleshoot linux errors like this since I’m more used to windows.

any additional info :
My laptop is a thinkpad E485

Post the output of inxi -Fzxx so we can see all of your system specs.

Also, post the output from `journalctl -b 1’ to post the journal from the previous boot, preferably the one which crashed - it would be handy to see what that last thing to be recorded was - it might not have been flushed, but you never know - we may get lucky.

Please paste the output into preformatted block is in your reply (Ctrl + e) or use the </> button in the reply panel, like so:

help anyone?

Can you set your power mode to performance and see if that improves the situation?

I’ll give that a try and let you know if it happens again

It froze again and after I did journalctl -k -b -1 -p err I got this

Can you post the lines from this particular journal session immediately before the first watchdog trigger at 00:02:47.

If it’s easier for you, post the entire journal output for this boot session to a pastebin.

You’re in Performance power mode when this issue occurred, I presume.

Same problem here with a Zenbook S 16 Ryzen AI 365 laptop : random freezes, nothing else to do but long press on start button to shutdown then restart.

Interesting, I run into this issue with kernel 6.12 only, whatever version of this kernel that I use.

No problem with any version of the 6.11 kernel, except that 6.11 is not able to handle the Bluetooth part of the Mediatek Wi-Fi 7 MT7925 Wireless LAN Card, which supports Bluetooth 5.4. Therefore, when running 6.11, I need to use a BT USB dongle with a supported chipset.

I encounter problems with kernel 6.12 whenever plugged in or not to my external monitor BenQ PD2725U through USB-C, directly plugged-in on AC, or on battery. In my experience, the power profile does not change anything at all. I run most of the time with balanced mode, but I also use performance mode when virtualizing with qemu/kvm.

Most of the times, running 6.12, the computer just freezes just after opening a user session.

I also run Fedora on an older Lenovo X1 Carbon Gen9 laptop, without any issue regardless the version or subversion of the kernel, 6.11 or 6.12.

The situation with the Zenbook is very unfortunate, because it should be my daily driver, but it is far too unstable now.

If someone has any clue on how to get out of this problem, it’d be my hero

Thanks guys !

Maybe this helps : I went into the process of reinstalling from scratch several times to narrow down the issue a little bit, and this happens whatever non standard out-of-the-box package or flatpak is installed on the laptop.

I just install from the F41 live CD, reboot, sudo dnf update to upgrade to kernel 6.12 and boom, it starts crashing.

If i use the laptop adding excludepkgs=kernel*-6.12* in etc/dnf/dnf.conf, it’s stable, but things do not work (mainly : bluetooth).

Thx !

Interesting informations here : Help with troubleshooting freezing with linux kernel 6.12 on arch - #17 by turkoiseaa - Linux - Level1Techs Forums

Found someone who switched from 120 to 60Hz refresh rate and had less problems. Done the same 1h ago, rebooted in kernel 6.12, and that’s stable since then.

I will confirm here if it stays stable.

Going to 60 Hz makes it stable with 6.12 in my case, but there are so many flaws in the image that it’s almost unusable. Stable but ugly. I went back to 6.11. At this time, with my combination of hardware and the amdgpu driver, kernel 6.12 is pretty unusable.

I have the same problem on a HP EliteDesk 705 G4. Compouter freezes hard and have to turn off by holding powerbutton

Hi Niclas,

Updates available for Vega through DNF, I installed them this morning and my previously unusable laptop worked like a charm for more than 1h, with kernel 6.12.

I’m note sure that is the cure, but maybe worth you give it a try ?

@turkoiseaa I ended up reinstalling Fredora but now doesn’t even boot. Not very impressed by Fedora so far

My fresh install also froze now. Everything just frooze. It dosen’t even respond to ping. So I cant ssh to look at logs

Is that many processes normal? I have 396 with two browsers running, but I’m running Sway on ZFS. You might want to run top and see if something is running wild in the background.

Did a fresh install using an other SSD but still hard freeze after using for ca 30 min. The computer is totaly fine. Runs Windows 11 without a problem. But Fedora does not work.
The screen freezes and cant do anything. I can ping it but thats it
