Fedora Workstation 41 ~randomly~ freezing

Hi fellow fedora community,

my pc is seemingly freezing randomly.
Frequency: Once a day (since I installed fedora some months ago)

The freezes are not while having any load like high-graphics games. The screen suddenly sometimes freezes when just watching a video on youtube, sometimes when the pc just started and I open thunderbird, sometimes when I lock the pc and come back to it after half an hour.

( Freeze = The screen is frozen in its last state, when running a video I can still hear the audio of it)
→ unplugging + plugging the monitor doesnt help
→ switching to tty doesn’t work
→ hard-resetting the pc is the only way out I know

The last freeze was today at 12:34 (in lock screen I only saw the frozen screen displaying the time 12:34).

After the freeze I restarted and tried journalctl -k -b -1 -p err
Return:

I hope somebody can help me get rid of those freezes.
Thanks in advance!

I suggest you update the system bios if possible. It may be that the older bios from 8/10/23 has been updated and this problem could be fixed with an update.

Thanks Jeff, yeah I’m using the bios from 8/10/23. Will update it today and give you feedback!

I am having same problem.
In last 2 months there are often updates which tends to freeze system.
Last time i had random freezing problem about 2 weeks ago.
Nothing interesting could be found in dmesg or journal.
Everytime its fixed after ± 1 day by other updates, often by some gnome libraries.
System is freezing randomly, after start of pc it will freeze within 1 hour for 100%.
It looks completly random.

Tried running 6.13.5 also tried 6.12.15
but kernel update was couple of days ago so I don t think its kernel causing it.

Here is output of rpm -qa --last

It also freezed while writing this post.
Stability of fedora 41 has become big issue for me and I am considering moving back to ubuntu.

Have anyone any idea ?

This indicates the linux kernel is still running. Does the CapsLock or NumLock key have a status light? If so and the status light is responding, the issue is probably with the display system.

Hard resets carry a risk of filesystem corruption. If you have enabled ssh access from another system you may be able a) collect more details of the issue and b) restart cleanly.

Such issues are likely to affect other linux distros so searching for the issue with similar hardware and linux kernel and Nvidia versions may be useful if a UEFI/BIOS update doesn’t solve the problem.

Seems like the update has actually fixed it. That was easier than I thought.
Thank you very much!

I’m sad that I didn’t think about ssh-ing onto the machine to try to gather more info.
I’ll keep that in mind for future bug research!
Thank you <3

@jonasgl
Maybe you should update your bios?
Or open another post, since your freezes seem pretty different to me.
And don’t forget to add the output of $journalctl -k -b -1 -p err (executed in the session after your pc froze).

I think I have latest bios, I have dualboot and I usually start windows once a week and check updates, also for bios.

After last update, yesterday, it stoped freezing when using 16:9 displays.
Only freezed on ultra wide display. So it looks its partly fixed.
Also tested disabling variable refresh rate, but it did not make difference.

So i think this thread can be closed and I will open new if I find something interesting to share.
