Fixed!

Using Gnome Tweaks, appearance, I set the default icon theme (it was hicolor)

Added theming

No need for Tweaks.
$ gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.interface icon-theme 'Adwaita'
Then restart gdm

Thanks for the heads-up. Similarly, Tweaks worked for me, too, by resetting the icon theme.
