I did a regular (weekly) update of F40 on a non-Nvidia PC. The update went well, but after doing the update, Firefox would not start. I logged out and logged back in and all the icons were gone, and several apps would not work, like Firefox and Terminal, but others did work like Software Update and Settings. However, they are all missing the icons like in the attached screenshot.
Did Gnome get corrupted? I thought it could be the rendered, so I switch it to gl, same issue. Maybe the settings for this particular user, logged in as a different user, same issue. Rebooted with different kernel version, same issue.
This is a plain vanilla installation of Fedora 40 using Wayland and running Gnome 46.
Any help on getting it fixed is appreciated. Thanks!
Could be an extension or some custom setting that is breaking something. Can you temporarily create a new user and try to login? Disable all gnome extensions.
You can get to a tty with Ctrl-Alt-F5 or other Fn keys (and similar to get back to gnome, maybe F1?). From there you could install a different terminal (qterminal for instance) which will hopefully work in gnome, so you don’t have to use the tty anymore.
This isn’t really a solution, but as a temporary workaround until someone more knowledgeable responds, you could install another desktop environment - eg sudo dnf install @kde-desktop for KDE (I’m thinking KDE or LXQt in case the problem is related to GTK). Though better create a new user and only log into the other desktop with that user, otherwise settings get mixed up, which is another headache.
And of course run sudo dnf upgrade --refresh in case it helps (probably won’t, at least until the next time you get a gnome update, but do it for the placebo anyway )
I tried a new user with no extensions. No difference. I logged in using Gnome in Xorg, no difference. I installed qterminal and as a new user installed xfce-desktop, xfce didn’t work. I just got the cursor on a blank screen. I installed lxqt-desktop using the new user. I got into a screen to choose the window manager, I think. I didn’t have one so I rebooted, and low and behold, Gnome in Wayland now works as expected. What in the world?! I uninstalled xfce and lxqt, and Gnome is still working as it should.
So thank you for all your suggestions. Somehow, something fixed the problem, whatever it was. Not solved, just a solution for me. I appreciate all your help.
