Hi, I’ve had some trouble with Nvidia in the past, and I’m planning to set up Silverblue for a friend who has an Nvidia 4090. I’ve experienced issues with updates that broke the OS when using Nvidia. Is this a common problem with Silverblue?
The problem really is with NVidia, not Linux. There is still the requirement for the akmod drivers AFAIK (I don’t use nvidia products though.
From the documentation: Troubleshooting :: Fedora Docs
In general updates where 3rd party packages break and the OS is not bootable or stays in a state between 2 upgrades do not happen on Fedora Atomic Desktops.
I have no experience with NVidia, but if an update fails it fails and will not break your desktop.
And you can install proprietary NVidia drivers on silverblue/Fedora Atomic Desktops, this is documented.
Here’s the official documentation on how to use Nvidia drivers from RPM Fusion with silverblue/kinoite:
https://rpmfusion.org/Howto/NVIDIA#OSTree_.28Silverblue.2FKinoite.2Fetc.29
(Noted in Timothee’s answer above)
You could also take a look at Universal Blue and their Bluefin (=Silverblue) or Aurora (=Kinoite) systems. They have images with Nvidia drivers (and other “batteries included”).
