After Fedora Silverbluse 42 installation (on clear SSD) custom profile images not displayed. Checked JPG, PNG, JXL, WEBP formats, many images. If choose standart image all works fine.
I didn’t see this issue, but I had something where the Appearance settings panel showed thumbnails for the previous version’s wallpapers instead of the current one.
Clearing ~/.cache helped for me, maybe it would help for this too. (Or if you want to keep the cache and maybe report it as a bug to Gnome, move everything in it to somewhere else to test).
I’ve seen this F42 GNOME, and a few random times years before. I have a few avatar pics as png and GNOME only does it with my main one, still did it after a few different GIMP converts even to jpg, but my other png avatars rendered fine.
I’m curious to find a solution too!
Edit: The problematic png on F42 renders fine as a user pic on openSUSE TW (20250418) GNOME 48 today.
Got this issue too, only way I know of is replacing the profile picture in /var/lib/AccountsService/icons/{PROFILE} itself, and it must match with the name of your user. Should display after if you do it correctly. Do note that you’ll need sudo to change anything in that directory.
I’m in f42 Gnome 48, just happened to me, the /var/lib/AccountsService/icons/{PROFILE} trick did it for me, couldn’t find anything on bugzilla, bit annoying tbh
Issue from GNOME GitLab here. Original problem is due to GTK, but maintiners say that it’s drivers problem. Nobody cares about this critical issue. Awaiting GNOME 49.
