Critical Discussion on udev Rules for Steam: Impact on Gamers Using Fedora

There is currently an intense discussion regarding the adoption of udev rules that could significantly impact the use of Steam on Fedora.

This is particularly important for gamers on Linux, especially those using Silverblue, as the lack of these rules makes it impossible to effectively use any joystick on Steam, rendering the application nearly useless.

I strongly encourage everyone to join the conversation at the following link, as this issue is critically important for Silverblue and all immutable variants: https://pagure.io/fedora-workstation/issue/473

Even if we end up not adding those rules, it’s not impossible for Atomic Desktops users to use them. They only have to overlay them on their systems. Yes, it’s not ideal, but that’s a reasonable workaround until things are aligned upstream.

You don’t even really need to overlay them. They’re just config files. You can take them out of the package and just copy them to /etc. This is what I did on my Silverblue system (for steam rules, and also the rules that let adb work).

I know, I’m mostly concern for noobs that try Silverblue and abandon it immediately when they notice that Steam doesn’t work properly
