I think this is due to how the flatpak application is packaged.
For my Silverblue 39, when using Google Chrome RPM downloaded from Google.com, Chinese display is normal.
If I install the Flatpak Chrome from Gnome Software, all Chinese fonts are all displayed as empty boxes.
But VSCode which is installed by rpm-ostree can’t display Chinese character as well
Also, Discord works fine, which is installed using flatpak
Understand that different flatpaks are built by different maintainers and not all are equal. Individual problems with each package should be filed as bugs so the maintainer is made aware and can work on a solution.

People suggested re-installing google-noto-sans-cjk-fonts to fix it.

Having the same problem here, Chinese text does not display neither in Joplin nor Obsidian but it does display in LibreOffice and Brave (All of them are flatpaks) on a newly installed Fedora 39 Silverblue.
Does this method work for you? You can layer google-noto-sans-cjk-fonts (system-wide), or download it from Google and place the new font in ~/.local/share/fonts/ (personal use).
No, I tried layering google-noto-sans-cjk-fonts and google-noto-serif-cjk-fonts as some info I’ve seen suggested and it did not work.
Then, does the second method work? Also please run fc-list in terminal and paste the results here.
Can confirm that downloading the fonts form https://fonts.google.com/noto/fonts and putting them on ~/.local/share/fonts/ worked for me. Really thank you for this!

Also may I ask I have one more weird issue, I can’t type with the chinese input in some applications such as Discord (Flatpak) or VsCode (Inside a Distrobox container) it just writes normally. However it works for example on Obsidian or Joplin, both Flatpaks.
For Discord Flatpak, first check if it’s using Wayland or X11. If Discord is using Wayland, you should disable the Wayland socket to force it to switch to X11. These can be done using Flatseal.
For VSCode + Distrobox container, I guess the issue might be missing input method in the Distrobox container.
I use rime as my Chinese input method
Confirmed this is working!
Discord is using X11, same problem and can’t figure out how to install the “Intelligent Pinyin” on distrobox but I’m not hopefull that’s the problem because other apps inside the container do not have this problem. Anyways do not worry, thanks for helping us figure out what was the issue with the missing fonts
