I’ve just been approached by a connection who is teaching a graduate course in usability and human factors . He’s looking for a project for his class to do in the spring (January–May) semester and would love to work with Fedora.
Here’s what he said
I’d need to work with someone from Fedora (probably one or more webmasters). This person would meet with me a few times in a video meeting, and respond to (provide comments on) some of the students’ work. I’ve included a general outline, below.
We’d provide usability test results to you in early May. This will be in the form of a written report, and a (recorded) video presentation.
Since this is a student project, there’s no cost to Fedora. I only need someone’s time.
Video interview, where I’d ask about the Fedora website, who uses it, what information people are looking for, what things Fedora would like to get out of the usability test, etc. I’ll record this to share with my students .
Our students will use that information to create Personas (descriptions of people who use a website). I’ll review the Personas and send the best Personas that I think match Fedora.
Fedora will review the Personas and provide comments (“these are great” and “these are not so great” … or “if you tweaked this to __ then that would be more like our users”). I’ll send these on a Saturday, and Fedora will need to provide comments by Wednesday the following week.
Our students will use that information to create Use Scenarios (user stories about why people use the website). I’ll review the Use Scenarios and send the best ones to Fedora for review.
Fedora will review the Personas and provide comments (“these are great” and “these are not so great” … or “if you tweaked…”). I’ll send those on a Saturday, and Fedora will need to provide comments by Wednesday the following week .
Our students will use that information to create Scenario Tasks (the tasks they’ll use in the usability test). I’ll review and send to Fedora the best Scenario Tasks for review.
Fedora will review the Scenario Tasks and provide comments (“these are great” etc). I’ll send these on a Saturday, and Fedora will need to provide comments by Wednesday the following week.
Our students will plan and execute their tests, then perform analysis and write a report. Each group (probably 3 or 4 groups) will also record a 15-20 minute video to provide an overview of their findings. I’ll share their results and videos with Fedora.
Video interview to wrap up the usability test project. Last time, I asked questions like “what results were surprising / not surprising to you” and “what takeaways really stand out from the findings.” I also ask “what worked well during this process” and “what would you recommend we change [process] for the next time I teach the course.” I’ll record that interview and share with the students so they can see the impact of their work.
Are y’all interested in this for Fedora Magazine? Who should be the point of contact?

Sure. I’m not sure that I’d actually be able to implement whatever changes they might suggest. But I think I should be able to squeeze in some interviews to talk about what we do, how we do it and our target audience.
