Upgrading CPU, do I need to reinstall?

So I decided to upgrade CPU to ryzen 5 5600x , I currently have ryzen 5 3600,I don’t really need anything more powerful, I just want to know If I would need to reinstall my current Fedora 40 installation? or Will Linux kernel catch up just fine

Never made a CPU upgrade.
But I moved multiple times hard disks/SSDs to totally different hardware and the installed Fedora system booted without any issue. So I can confidently assume that you will not have to reinstall anything.

Thank you! I think It should work as well, just being cautious, posted in hopes maybe some people can share experience where something went wrong, you never know. Appreciate the response.

It will just work. After all there is only one installed usb image, not one per CPU type.

I think the main thing would just be making sure your BIOS is updated and supports both 3rd and 5th gen processors and you have the latest AGESA updates.

I just bought the motherboard and installed it this Sunday, it is msi B550 so it will support it, And about AGESA I really don’t know how to install it, I tried just updating the bios using usb, but it just does not ready the files I put on it, the bios version I have is from 7 months ago, so I guess it should be good with it?

I think most BIOS updates include AGESA updates, though I don’t know if there are any motherboard manufacturers that publish AGESA updates separately.

The only reason why I mentioned the BIOS supporting both 3rd and 5th gen concurrently is due to the size limits for the firmware and some motherboard manufacturers may limit the number of generation or processors supported to keep the size down. It usually happens more often when a new generation or a refresh comes out.

You should be good with the BIOS version you have.

I see, thank you for an explanation, I just googled and the update for a new gen came out almost half a year before the date of my current version, so yeah I should be ok. I just hope new CPU and ram will finally fix the hard freezes I have been getting past 5 months, I already upgraded my PSU since I thought it was the first culprit, but nope , keep getting hard crashes, linux and windows alike :frowning:

I hope it fixes the crashing issue as well.

If not, it could be due to potential thermal issues (uneven mounting pressure of the heatsink or liquid cooler block), or worst-case scenario, a component on the motherboard.

Oh yeah I’ve read it all in past few weeks, temperatures are fine I checked them during stress testing, PSU and motherboard are both new and installed last Sunday, so my 2 last culprits are ram modules and CPU that’s why I ordered both, fingers crossed, anyway don’t want to bother you anymore, thanks a lot for all the replies , knowing I at least don’t have to burn my hard-drive another time is some good news)
