I have been running Fedora 41 on my XPS laptop. One problem I have had is related to the following behaviour: sometimes when I shutdown my laptop the screen goes black and then restarts again, prompting me for my password to decrypt the disk so that fedora can then install some vital updates.
This is a problem because at the point that the screen goes black, I assume it is shut down, close the laptop, unplug it, and then put it in my bag where it maybe stays for several days before I open it again. And then it won’t boot up because the battery is dead.
Or at least, I think that is the explanation for what was happening. I repeatedly discovered that my laptop wouldn’t boot up without plugging into a power source and letting it recharge.
Is there some other way to change this behavior? Have the updates get installed when I actually want to boot up the laptop? Is there also some way to have the laptop automatically shut down when it has been asleep for too long? (Maybe this also happened because I didn’t even shut down the laptop.)
The behaviour could depend on the desktop, because maybe you have automatic updates enabled via say Gnome Software. If so, then best to disable automatic updates.
I would recommend updating via command line, once every week or two,
