Unable to shut down system after latest kernel update

Sorry, before I do anything, just want to confirm that what you mean is:

  1. Add x-initrd.attach behind discard in etc/crypttab/ using something like vim and save
  2. After updating /etc/crypttab, set the default kernel back to 6.7.11
  3. Reboot several times to see if the issue has been resolve under 6.7.11

Is that correct?

/etc/crypttab has 4 columns. The last column is a comma-separated list of options, so just add ,x-initrd.attach after the list of options.

Just tried adding x-initrd.attach to /etc/crypttab and saved, confirmed by checking contents with cat after saving and closing. Then changed default kernel to 6.7.11 and tried rebooting couple of times, the issue still persists.

I can see the message “Powering off” when shutdown by pressing [Esc], but again the system is stuck.

Currently I’ve reverted all changes and kept 6.7.10 as default.

I am experiencing this too. thinkpad x270

Do you still see this:

Is the “Powering off” message new? Are there changes in the journalctl entries after shutdown is initiated?

I’m not sure if the “Powering off” message is new or not.

However I can confirm the journalctl entries are identical under 6.7.11 regardless whether x-initrd.attach is in /etc/crypttab or not.

Are you using luks? If so, compare your journalctl entries after shutdown is initiated with those found by others.

Can confirm the same issue where the system hangs at the fedora logo when rebooting, with 6.7.11-200 on a self built MSI x570/5900x/6900xt based system. I managed to skip installing 6.7.10 so I’ve rolled back to .9 and all is good for now. Just want to point out that this is not likely related to a brand or form factor.

Same here, I managed to take a photo when I opened the lid and didn’t wake up right away

OS: Fedora 39 Silverblue
Lenovo Legion 5 15ARH05H

Also I couldn’t shutdown/reboot, at least I didn’t wait because I took too much (almost a minute waiting). I just rebooted (forced shutdown) to the previous image and now I’ll exclude the kernel to be able to update the system without getting the new kernel (I don’t know how to do it in Silverblue, if anyone knows please help)

Same problem on a freshly installed Ultramarine Linux (F39).
As soon as the kernel updates from 6.5 to 6.7.11-200.fc39.x86_64 the system starts to hang on each reboot / shutdown.
This is happening on a brandnew Lenovo ThinkPad T14s Gen 4.

You can find my journalctl with censored hostname, user and ip addresses here: https://paste.opensuse.org/pastes/fa019e9c2053

Can second this one. My usb ports stop working after an upgrade to 6.7.11 and I get the hangups on a shutdown or reboot.

I know that this maybe just a temporary thing but it worked for me (I also have a Dell laptop) and encountered the same issue that after kernel update I couldn’t properly restart or shut down my notebook anymore (just via hard button shut/restart). To avoid picking up restart after restart older kernel (everyone simply should have few to pick) I have set an older kernel version permanently as a default to pick and followed the instructions in this link:

I hope this will also help some of you until this thread won’t be fixed.

Hi Folks: tonight’s/today’s kernel update to 6.8.4-200.fc39.x86_64 seems to have fixed the issue on my Thinkpad T1 G6.

(Is there an off chance that the sleep/poweroff issue is related to a separate lockscreen problem --KDE/Wayland – requiring the use of loginctl in a root shell to recover? If so, might you point me to the relevant thread?)

Can confirm after update to 6.8.4 the shut down/reboot issue has gone away for me; can’t speak for others.

Those affected may want to try to upgrade to 6.8.4 and see if you can get the same results.

6.8.4 works for me too.

in my case, it can be confirmed
after updating the new latest kernel 6.8.4-200.fc39.x86_64 from the update repository
problems related to reboot, shutdown and suspend can be resolved
Likewise, problems with USB detection and power management can be resolved too

Linux dell-5480 6.8.4-200.fc39.x86_64 #1 SMP PREEMPT_DYNAMIC Thu Apr 4 20:45:21 UTC 2024 x86_64 GNU/Linux

I am still facing this issue since kernel 6.7. Reboot,Shutdown or sleep hungs. On kernel 6.6 this issue was not present. Any info you need from me so I can help, please tell me.

Fedora 39 with latest kernel 6.8.4-200.fc39.x86_64 on DELL XPS 13 9320 using LUKS.

Thanks!

Does the system have the Dell firmware updates? Check with sudo fwupdtool get-updates.

fedora updated the kernel to 6.8.4 today or a day ago, when possible see if the bug is resolved

Hello @apollotonkosmo ,
Welcome to :fedora: !
I would suggest that your issue may be different enough, since the latest kernel update didn’t solve it for you, that it deserves a topic of it’s own in ask.fp.o. Could you possibly make your comment a new topic in ask?
