Unable to load Workstation on Mini HP pc

I’m new to Linux, but I have and been using Fedora 42, now 43 on my Sony laptop (SVE151G11L) with a i7, 8 GB of RAM and 1TB HDD using an external monitor and it has been working great!

I decided I wanted a little better computer and bought a mini PC HP EliteDesk 800 G1 (256GB SSD, Intel Core 17-4785T, 2.20 GHz, 8GB) and Fedora does not easily install on it as it does on my other computers.

I apologize for the brief description below, but I wanted to not have to write everything because it is so long all the steps I’ve done. So if you have questions please ask.

In short;

I’ve used Ai to help walk me through the install on this HP, but I keep having problems.

Brief description of what’s going on :

Bootable USB (via Rufus) won’t boot on the black USB port (back of pc) unless I enter acpi=off after accessing the “set prams boot menu” and selecting “e”.

Then it boots, I go through the install steps, deleting certain partitions in mount point mapping. Long description short, Ai tells me to fix the “chroot” once in the “live environment”, but so far nothing has worked. When I power off the computer it hangs on a backlit screen and the power stays on. Ai says I need to do these steps to “ permanently fix the issues”

If I I put the USB in the blue port and let it boot normal, it hangs on the Fedora logo. If I try F9 it freezes on a frame with a bunch of text and numbers, so that it is why I have to boot from the black USB port, as it is the only port that will work.

There is so much more Ai has had me do, but nothing seems to fix what I think is the chroot issue according to Ai??

I’ve seen people running Fedora on the mini pc, but not sure what I’m needing to do.

I’ll do my best to answer all questions, provide pictures etc.

We need more details to understand your problem. Was the system used/refurbished? Did the system come with Windows installed? If so, do you want to use both Windows and Fedora? It could be helpful if you can install inxi in the Live USB environment and post the output from running inxi -Fzxx in a terminal (as pre-formatted text using the </> button from the top ;ine of the text entry panel).

Was the system used/refurbished? Used

Did the system come with Windows installed? Came with no OS, but from the seller it had Win10 prior.

If so, do you want to use both Windows and Fedora? Only Fedora 43 Workstation at this time, maybe once it is running properly, I might install WinBoat.

One: To do this I need to be in the Terminal, in the Live USB environment ? Two: Please write out the command so I do not screw it up.

In the terminal: sudo dnf install inxi. It will be lost if you reboot, since the Live USB environment runs a fixed image.

Some images appear to trying to configure grub in the live environment which can’t work.

It appears that you are manually configuring the installation.
Fedora will automatically create the required partitions and file systems if you simply use the first screen and tell it which drive to use then continue the installation (instead of using the storage manager)

The one popup you see is asking which partition to select for / (the root file system). It is showing the recommended & required partitions. Those 4 partitions/filesystems would be what is created in the automatic installation.

Sorry for the multiple posts of the same thing. The “admin” put my post on hold and I didn’t realize it till later.

The first pictures with all the red type apparently was because I failed to turn on WiFi.
Once WiFi was on, I was able to run the command to get the print out.

When the command asked Y/N, I didn’t get a chance to select Y, it went right to the next line and finished.

I’m going to do another complete reinstall, but I would like to know how the boot menu needs to be configured?
I also read online the “quick start” feature could cause issues, but not 100% that option is available at this point?

Also from reading I’ve seen it say there’s some sort “security” feature in the BIOS on these Elite HP mini pc’s that could cause issues, not sure if that’s true.

Also I’m using Rufus set to GPT, UEFI, FAT32 and when prompted I select ISO.

I’ve downloaded the software from Fedora, 43 Workstation 64_84

I’m using a USB drive with 32GB

I’ve tried plugging in the drive in the back black USB port and then tried in the front blue USB port

Entering the BIOS I’m constantly pressing the ESC key, then F9, and selecting my USB drive.

With the USB in the BLACK port I get a screen with a bunch of text and the system freezes. (See second picture)

With the USB in the BLUE port, I also get a screen with a bunch of text (See second picture), but it goes to the Fedora logo and spinning circle, but stales on the Fedora screen with the spinning circle; that is if I choose to run the program to install.
The way I got around this to get to the Fedora Install pop up, I have to type “e”, then once on the second page, I had to type “acip=off” after “rhgb”. In short: (rhgb acid=off)
After I’ve done that I press F10 and the system loads to the installation screen.
You can see this step in my screen picture, the first picture below, but I have to enter acip=off or else I can’t get to the Fedora installation.

I’m not sure why it is this difficult to install Fedora on this HP mini when installing on 5 other computers with older hardware goes smooth, including an old Acer ZHE Chromebook.
Also to add, my screen resolution during these installs is 800x800, no where near 2400.

I want to say thank you for your help, but I threw in the towel.
There seems to not be a way this HP will play nicely with Fedora. I’ve wasted to many hours doing so many commands and finding that with Fedora 43, it’s almost impossible to get it to work.
I didn’t want too, but I installed Mint and it installed with ease in no time. I was also able to install WinBoat that I need for one Windows program and it’s working great.

When Fedora 44 comes out, I might see if it will be compatible and give it try.
