Stuck after grub menu when booting Fedora 40 USB installer

Hi there,

I have a similar issue to the one described in this Reddit post: Stuck after GRUB menu when booting Fedora 40 USB.

I recently bought a new laptop, a Redmibook Pro 14 2024 with an Intel Core Ultra5. I want to install Fedora on it. However, when I start the installation using USB, after choosing “check and install” option, I get a black screen with only a “_” in the top left corner.

My laptop has one Windows 11 disk, and I have already disabled Windows Fast Boot. I also physically removed the Windows 11 SSD before installing Fedora on another SSD. I also turn off the Secure Boot.

Can anyone help me troubleshoot this problem?

Please see the link below. I updated bios and installed the Fedora41 successfully.

You should mention what graphics hardware you have. If Nvidia, see: The installer (and some other apps) might not start on systems with an Nvidia graphics card.

Some users have worked around this problem by installing F39 and upgrading to F40.

I vaguely remember having this issue last time I installed, the USB contained Windows “system volume information” folders. I just re-wrote the ISO to the USB again (unplug after Media Writer ejects it and never open it on Windows) and the issue went away. But tbh normally those folders would cause checksum fail not system hang.

Other than that, not sure if these help:
The iGPU is Intel.
“Use distributions with kernel version >= 6.10.”. The kernel in Fedora Workstation Live is 6.8.

Hi @gnwiii and @navras ,

Thank you for your help. I tried installing Fedora 39 and Fedora 40 live respins, but neither of them worked. The graphics card is an iGPU.

I also found that adding nomodeset doesn’t help. The screen shows “booting from the list” and then freezes at that point.

A further update, I can install Ubuntu 24.04 on my new laptop, its kernel version is 6.8 (GA), I really don’t know why I cannot install Fedora 40, I think its kernel version is also 6.8

It seems like the current ISO only works for Ultra 7 but not Ultra 5. I have contacted multiple users who have already installed Fedora 40 on their Ultra 7 laptops. If you have successfully installed Fedora 40 on an Ultra 5 laptop, please let me know.

Searching the LHDB gave other examples with Meteor Lake-P Intel Arc graphics failures for Ultra 5, but Ultra 7 works. For Ultra 5 graphics the probes say: “Driver is not found or not configured.”

I wonder of Ubuntu has backported a patch to 6.8.

I’m not sure about the backport. I also tried Fedora 41. However, I still can’t install it in basic graphics mode. I think its kernel should be 4.9?
I won’t touch Fedora for a long time after using this OS for 15 years.
