I have an issue with the Brother printer MFC L 3750CDW, which works on other Linux distributions and as well on older Fedora versions. After the upgrade to Fedora 33, the issue appeared.
The device was upgraded from previous Fedora versions, so I had the printer configured already. That failed from the beginning (I don’t remember the exact error shown, but it was something like driver not found)
Re-adding the printer was easy with the installed printer driver, I also have the MFCL3750CDW.ppd ppd file in /etc/cups/ppd. I ended up with two printers configured (set-up differently in the UI, but the result is the same) MFC-L3750CDW-series and MFCL3750CDW. The logs contain print tries with both printers.
When starting a print, I get both a success message that the print was successfully started and - if the printer is actually connected - that the print was successfully executed, but it wasn’t.
Issuing the print and then connecting the printer causes this:

Hello, new to the forum and am also consider myself a noob for Fedora. Running Fedora 33 as my primary computer, single boot, no other os.
Have been using for several years and have had both Brother printers working great on network connection, even scanning. Older printer is a Brother MFC-J430W and our newer is a Brother MFC-J6945DW. Have only been using the newer MFC-J6945DW for about 4 or 5 months now. Several weeks ago, maybe after “33 Upgrade?” the network printing became very delayed by as much as a couple of hours from pressing the print button or it may wait a min and print. I don’t understand the wait as my wifes windows machine is experiencing no printing problems and she laughs at me.
Now I have removed the printers and tried to reinstall selecting the printer at the correct network address on the “add printer” screen. I have tried to use each of the different selections and cannot get any of them to work. Like in “sebix” post, I have downloaded the Brother drivers and installed again. When I try to print it shows “Ready” I press print “1 print job” for just a second and then reports “complete” way to fast, but no printing at all.
I am very interested in how this works out on your post. I have MANY hours invested in trying to correct this problem. I usually manage to fumble my way through but this seems to be a tough problem that I just don’t understand. Yes, any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Have a great day !
What I also tried in the mean time is the following (unsuccessfully) to exclude the chance that the upgrade from a previous Fedora version or a unclean state may be the reason: Create a Fedora 33 live image, start it (live, not installing), install the printer driver and try printing. Same behavior, it’s not printing at all.
Hello All. I don’t know if this might help anyone else but I finally got my laptop printing on our wireless printer. I am very sorry that I did not document what I did to make this happen. Anyway, I have been trying very hard to be able to print again as my Fedora laptop is my primary and only computer now other than a android tablet. I needed to be able to print again.
I downloaded another distro to try and found that the Gnome interface was the same as my Fedora 33. Loaded a live usb and tried to install my printer. No Luck, again the Brother MFC-J6945DW is not in the dropdown list of printers. I really did not want to go back out and try to install the online printer drivers again, So I just picked something close, a Brother MFC-7840W.
Presto it worked. The test print came out fine and without any time delay this time. I searched and found one of my needed documents and it printed perfectly even with the color pictures and special formatting.
I rebooted to my Fedora 33 and now installed the Brother MFC-7840W and am able to print everything that I need without a single issue. Thank You…
I don’t know if this information may help anyone else be able to do a workaround on their system but if it helps one person then it was worth this response. Like I said before, I am very sorry for the lack of documentation on error outputs but this is the best that I can do right now. Still Learning Everyday, but at least I am Windows Free. Have a great day
Thank you for the update. It appears the Brother MFC-J6945DW printer is correctly handled by the driver for the MFC-7840W so that is good to have confirmed for others to find.
Thanks again.
This may be completely unrelated, but for the record:
I’ve got the same printer (Brother MFCL3750CDW), which used to work quite well on Fedora, using the drivers, that can be downloaded from the manufacturers site. But recently, it stopped to work, all of a sudden. From that point on, the printer queue acted basically like a black hole, accepting all documents, but nothing was received by the printer.
I tried different port definitions (ipp, lpd, socket) without success. In the end, I changed the LogLevel to debug in /etc/cups/cupsd.conf, and studied the log messages with “journalctl -u cups -e -l”. As it turned out, the printer driver was missing a certain Perl module (File::Copy). Well, that was something, that I could help with.
