NVIDIA problems, should I be worried

Problems with NVIDIA are increasing for me. Updates brought some performance, but is unstable, or at least not consistent and, at least on my machine, it looks like with kernel 6.0 it got worse.

I updated from 520.56.06 (RPMFusion) to 525.60.11 (Negativo17), but those (below) messages and others have been happening for a while. But lately the only game I was able to play with no problems (crashing, freezing etc.) ESO, is crashing/freezing randomly now. After 10-15 minutes, after one hour, after hours. The system completely freezes when the game freezes for some seconds, and Gnome gets back normal, but the game continues with audio with black screen or a frozen image. Steam is not able to finish/close/force close the game, so I have to use kill, killall or pkill. The act of killing the .exe (eso64.exe), for example, also freezes completely the system for some seconds. Tried also with different version of Proton.

All that and the flickering while on hybrid graphics is very annoying. BUT what is worrying me now are the “165.0 MHz” and “2660.0 MHz maximum pixel clock” messages when the crashes happen. My monitor is a 75Hz one and the screen of my Legion 5i is 120Hz. Few days back, the crash happened and also the screens were both acting when you set the refresh rate wrong (like on CRTs) with some lines on the screen. It never happened before. It happened twice I think, not sure if just those two times, but got me worried.

Should I be worried?

AFAIK Negativo is not a fedora related repo and I cannot assist with the differences between the way rpmfusion and negativo configure the device management.

Personally I have never had any issues with the driver installed from rpmfusion, with any release of fedora nor any update done.

I think in the subtext of your post you also mention steam and game playing as the cause, so it seems likely it is not wholly related to nvidia but also to steam and proton.

Yep, I know. Changed to check if the newer version would solve the issues. Most of the problems happened before I changed repos and versions. Changing to the new version made no difference.

I always had some kind of problems with NVIDIA drivers, but lately it crashes etc are happening with much more frequency.

I tested Proton versions to try checking if it was having any influence.

Hi - sorry, maybe dumb questions on my part, but do these issues occur when booting off of a live USB / using the nouveau driver on a fresh system? (Basically, can we rule out anything hardware-related?) And with the NVIDIA drivers, have you tried them out in both Wayland and X11?

Most of the problems indeed where hardware related. Had my laptop’s motherboard replaced.

Everything was awesome, now having problems with flickering (hope this is the right word) and external monitor with frozen image and turning off or at least being considered turned off by Gnome, since it changes my dual monitor configuration on hybrid graphics out of nowhere and on both HDMI or USB-C. it Also, when it happens, if I put it to only use the external monitor things get extremely slow, even with the game and steam closed. It takes almost 10 seconds to the Screen configuration (Meta key + p) to show up, for example. Clicking out of a Windowed game freezes for a second. The flickering shows an old image very quickly on the screen and also a very quick black screen.
The Fedora’s guide configurations makes no difference, but it also points to Archlinux’s wiki to set up GDM. Which does work for me, it gets stuck before GDM login screen.
The flickering is a problem, that was not happening for a long time, used to happen with some driver versions even on my GTX1050 mobile at the time, and now its back.
I don’t want to mess with configs, I just want it to be stable for me to make sure is another hardware problem instead of drivers, kernels or Gnome problems.
