Strange Happenings after latest update

Hey all,

Ever since the last kernel update (6.13.4) I’ve been having some strange issues that have made the system unusable; in fact I’ve been forced to compose this post on my phone since it froze and crashed midway through writing twice.

The first thing I noticed was lag. After every major screen change, e.g. switching desktops, the whole system would freeze for a moment. Suspecting nvidia driver issues, I ran nvidia-smi and got this (apologies for screenshot, my computer froze as I was writing)

which seemed ok. However, no flat pack application was able to use the gpu. Prism (Minecraft launcher) would crash, and resources (system monitor) knew only that the gpu was present (all fields were N/A).

Then even more weird stuff began happening. When trying to kill background apps, some artifacts would appear;

When I tried printing a document, my secondary monitor would go black for a few seconds before coming back. And every 10 minutes or so, the whole system just freezes indefinitely until I reboot. I don’t know what triggers it, only that the bug seems to have a survival instinct cause it keeps stopping me from finishing this post :stuck_out_tongue:

My system info is
i9-12900K @ 5.2Ghz
Nvidia 4060
32GB memory
Fedora 41

Any ideas what could be up?

EDIT: Forgot to mention some other stuff: the speakers will sometimes emit a weird crunch, and drag ‘n’ drop into firefox (but not anything else) reliably crashes the system. None of these issues were present last week.

There a number of reported issues from people running the 6.13 kernel.
See recent topics posted here.

Suggest you boot on the previous 6.12 kernel to get back to a stable system until people can find fixes.

Did you update the flatpak nvidia runtime?

As Barry said, kernel 6.13 and Flatpaks are not working for many. 6.14 will not fix it so go back to 6.12 until 6.15 comes out.

I can chime in here, even if I have just a Intel UHD Graphics @ 1.15 GHz [Integrated] graphics card. However, until now, I only saw an (astonishing major) problem with the flatpak version of foliate thus far. I will indeed also revert to 6.12 now.

For those interested, some symptoms of the problem (thus far only seen with the foliate flatpak)

  • Launching an epub file would open the foliate window, but foliae the was stuck at a white window. THe keyboard became unresponsive, the mouse still worked.
  • Gnome Shell would display the dialog to “wait or close” the application. Clicking “Close” would not actually close the program.
  • I was able to open the overview with the mouse, switch to another desktop and launch some programs, others not.
    • Firefox would not anymore launch.
    • The terminal would launch, but tools like top, htop or px did not launch - without error (so no way to close the process there). Launching firefox from the terminal did not start firefox, but also did not yield any output in the terminal
  • I could access the system menu to close, but the system would not shutdown.
  • Only a hard shutdown (holding the powerbutton for 10 seconds) would shit down the system.

Also the dnf-installed version of foliate showed problems, but somewhat less severe. The epub would open, but at some point the program freezes, again without possibility to close it.

The next update of the 6.13 kernel (6.13.5) should fix the flatpak issues. Its currently in testing but should be released soon. No need to wait until 6.15.
