Low upload speed when using VPN

Hi all,
I experience low upload speeds when I use VPN (Nordvpn) using ovpn files and Network-manager.
I have a 400 Mbps glass fibre connection and although download reaches 430 Mbps, upload hardly reaches 100 Mbps. (yes, that is a low speed although it is still a high number, I do pay for 400 Mbps). I have had contact with Nordvpn and tried several things they advised me but stil, as soon as the VPN is on (which is always of course) the upload speed is not what it should be.

It started with me using old ovpn files, downloading newer ones did not do the trick.
It turned out I had a DNS leak but that is sorted out now with the new ovpn files.
I switched off the Brave Shields and also Privacy Badger but that didn’t change anything.
I tested with Brave and also with Firefox but same issue, around the same speeds, measured by speedtest.net
I cleaned the firewall and DNS rules from my Linux laptop: no change.
Nordvpn sent me 2 DNS server addresses which I am using now but again no changes.

Who knows of something which might help me getting a normal upload speed again. When I switch off the VPN I do have it, but that’s not what I want.

Thanks.

Have you tested it with a Wireguard connection?

NordVPN has a Linux client for Fedora, I would try it to see if speed improves and I would change OpenVPN to Wireguard as well as trying different servers close to your location. But it is not uncommon for a budget VPN to have a top speed of 100Mbps, I would not be surprised that is their top speed, you are sharing the server with lots of other people.

I would agree but Jandemus also tried Firefox’s VPN, and that uses Mulvad. Could be that it is rate limited in the free tier.

No, I did not. Some years ago I started using VPN’s and one of them was Nordvpn which is still use today.

Yes, I know, but I use Kinoite and installing their GUI app on Kinoite is not possible. There is also a CLI version which I have used but to be honest, I’m not a fan.
Nordvpn has had speeds of 400 Mbps, there was no difference between with and without the vpn.
But, I will look into Wireguard, no idea yet what it is but I will find out.

I did try Firefox. When I used it with Nordvpn on, the speed was low, without it I had my normal upload speed so Firefox’s vpn works well.
I see that Firefox shows my own IP-address on whatsmyip.com plus I can’t find the VPN button to switch it on. I use version 149.0.2 as Flathub flatpak, I guess I don’t have it yet.

I will have a look at Wireguard to see what that is and if I can use it. Thanks guys.

It showed up on my Firefox 149.0 the other day. Justa appearen in the toolbar.
If you ‘customise toolbar’ you should find the VPN button.
It could be region dependent, but I’m in Germany.

It is a progressive rollout, you must be signed into a Mozilla account and reside in a supported region (US, UK, Germany, France).

It looks like NordVPN is working on a fix for Fedora Atomic.

So we are neighbors, I live in the Netherlands.
I have to install the VPN, found it in the settings. I still have a Nordvpn account and to waste that and get a new one is not very appealing.

I did sign in but that didn’t help me much. I wonder what the Mozilla account does.

I just tried using a Nordvpn tcp ovpn file instead of the udp versions I always use and now my speed is back to maximum. I try that for a while to see how it works and I will try to make the Nordvpn cli app working. I have had it before on Kinoite 43, am now using 44 with a new install.

Thank you guys for all your advise.

The Netherlands is not a supported region, Mozilla VPN will not show up.
