(Fedora 44 KDE Plasma) (WCN785x) Wireless network speed hardcaps under 20mbps

Hello. For the past few weeks, I’ve been dealing with an unyielding problem wherein my desktop PC has been stuck hovering between 5-20mbps network speed, as corroborated by multiple speed-testing websites. Specifically, this seems to only occur hours AFTER a the distro is initially installed. On a fresh installation, or on a live boot, this problem does not exist, and I can hit speeds up to and over 500mbps. It takes time to fully manifest, first as initial connectivity drops, progressing into those lows becoming the norm. I would like to apologize beforehand in case I forget to add any details, as I have been troubleshooting this for weeks, and have tried many solutions, through which I have found only one stopgap measure, and it is only a bypass rather than a solution.

I am on Fedora 44 KDE Plasma with, as of 6/6/26, as inauspicious a date as it is, the latest updates to the OS.

Finally, I would also like to preface that this issue STARTED on Nobara, which assisted in precipitating my transition to base Fedora. However, this behavior was identical between both Nobara and Fedora. At this point I do not know what to believe.

This issue started appearing when our ISP, Xfinity, insisted that we replace our router with a new model. I was personally against it, yet had little decision in the matter. I cannot imagine how it could have caused this problem, yet I feel obligated to mention it regardless.

I have asked a couple times at different points in the day on Fedora Chat to gather multiple potential solutions, and have come up dry, on top of extensive Internet searching. Ethernet is not an option, unfortunately, and I will be lucky if it ever becomes one.

The attempted solutions I have tried:
Creation of a config file to set wifi.powersave = 2
Adding a pcie_aspm = off configuration
Purchasing a wireless USB antenna
Disabling IPv6
Rebooting. Repeatedly.

The only “solution” I have found to work was to connect my phone via USB tethering and ape off of its wi-fi, which easily runs up to 200mbps.

A final note is some confusion I found when researching my model of motherboard. I found the original vendor’s page, and it lists the motherboard as having a QCNCM865, which does not appear to match my system.

I was about to have a quick look at your kit in the inxi output and saw it’s sprayed with “12”'s throughout the output. Did you do that and if so, how? :slight_smile:

It took me a moment, but I think that might be a result of me using Yakuake and just copy-pasting out of that. I re-ran the command in Konsole and it gave me a far better formatted output. By the time you see this I should have the Yakuake output replaced with the Konsole output.

This seems to indicate it may be an ISP issue, possibly with the router itself, and not fedora nor network config. Especially since connecting via your phone gives the much better thruput.

Have you by chance connected to the router/AP using ethernet instead of wifi and tested speeds there?

Due to the location in the house, ethernet is not an option, unfortunately. And I honestly am not sure what could be causing this problem, since my laptop which also runs Fedora is not having this limitation, right next to the problem desktop.

I’ll add a couple more things to the original post for informational completeness’ sake, but one other thing I just remembered that could maybe be a clue as to the problem is that someone in the Fedora chat mentioned something about Wi-Fi 7 being too new? But even if that is the case, I specifically purchased an external antenna that uses an older Wi-Fi standard.

And we have tried reaching out to the ISP, but they are as reliable as…well, an ISP. Their tech support wasted our time, and the technician they were supposed to send out never arrived. We plan on reaching out again shortly to continue haranguing them over this.
