LibreOffice UI layout changed

Its looks like this now. More compact, not syncing the distro theme, bloated, ugly, etc.

It used to look so good like the image shown below. I use an Ubuntu theme color named Yaru. App icons were not compact. The options used are laid out widely and were more visible like in the google-search-image show below.
676446b5ea27380335271d02deaaabbe273a488f.webp

How do I bring this back? And what happened?

Just go through all the million options that LO provides. You can change icons and appearance (dark mode), you can now even group icons to tabs (similar to MS Office).

Keep on searching the internet, there is plenty of post on how to make LO look better.

Nope, this does not help.

It’s definitely not about “trying to look like MS office” or “dark theme”.
It is more compact and it doesn’t recognize the theme I have to choosen from Gnome Tweaks.
All options and sub-options are small, not broad and wide like in the second screenshot.

I’m sorry, what exactly is missing? It looks exactly the same here, nothing has changed. Are you referring to missing toolbars? Just enable them from “view > toolbars”:

If it’s the colours you’re referring to, test out in a new user and see what it looks like. It it looks fine there, then all the theming that you’ve done needs to be investigated.

I’d also like to remind you to be careful about your phrasing please. Saying something looks “horrible” is considered rude in many cultures. A topic that says “UI changed, how can I get it back to so and so” is much better than “looks horrible!!”. It is much more positive and constructive.

The screenshot of your LibreOffice is normal. It’s good.

But mine has changed. It looks more compact. Options like Files, Edit, View, etc in my case have become thinner and smaller.

Dnf’s Libreoffice = 7.1 . Something is wrong here. The way it looks.

Flatpat’s Libreoffice = 7.1. Looks normal. What it should be. All options are laid out widely and clearly more visible.

I’ll keep that in mind.

Please create a new user and see how it looks there. My libreoffice installation is using dnf, and as you see, looks just fine. The one difference here is that I do not have any themes modifying gnome-shell at all. So that would be where you should investigate to start with. By creating a new user that does not have your theme modifications, you will be able to confirm this.

Flatpaks, since they’re sandboxed, do not generally pick up themes etc. from the desktop environment as far as I know.

Is there a command to clean uninstall libreoffice like in Ubuntu i.e sudo apt remove --purge libreoffice. I want to remove every trace of LibreOffice and want to reinstall it to check.

Hrm, why though—what indicates that there’s an issue with your system installation of libreoffice? Have you modified any system files manually?

Have you created a new user to check yet? That’s the simplest and quickest way to figure out if this is a system wide issue or one limited to your user configuration. If does not happen in the new user, there’s no point of reinstalling libreoffice, since that’s not where the issue is.

To answer your question: what does apt remove --purge do? Does it also remove configurations in your user folder (~)?? dnf and rpm do not do that—it’s strictly against policy to touch a users’s home directory at all.

To reinstall libreoffice, just do:

sudo dnf reinstall libreoffice\*

and then to check if any system configuration files were modified, use:

sudo rpmconf -a

It doesn’t look like libreoffice includes any configuration files that are user modifiable by default, though. So the last command shouldn’t find anything libreoffice related:

$ rpm -qal --configfiles libreoffice\*
/usr/lib64/libreoffice/share/psprint/psprint.conf

User specific configuration should be at ~/.config/libreoffice. Check in libreoffice under Tools > Options > Paths. (Again, creating a new user means all of this will be clear and back to default, so please try that first?)

You may want to check

this is the simplest way to determine if it’s a user/profile issue or the application.

I created a user name; log out and log in to the new user. Everything looked fresh and new. Opened LibreOffice which I have reinstalled it. It was complete and small like it was for pranav users. Nothing normal.

pranav@fedora ~> sudo useradd bond
[sudo] password for pranav:
pranav@fedora ~ [1]> sudo passwd bond
Changing password for user bond.
New password:
Retype new password:
passwd: all authentication tokens updated successfully.

What to do next?!

If I was pranav, I would not be afraid to delete ~/.config/libreoffice and start with a fresh experience.

Since I was original pranav, I actually did that too. Didn’t make a dent.

The UI still looks the same, unsatisfactory. I wonder what happened to original look I used to have.

Can I just confirm that bond is a brand new user and that /home/bond etc. didn’t exist before? And when you say logout and back in, you mean using the GUI, via GDM? When you logged in to the new user, did you get the “welcome to Fedora/Gnome” etc. windows?

If you’re not getting a fresh “vanilla” UI in the new user with a completely new environment, then there’s something system-wide at work. So, can you please note what and how tweaks you’ve made to your system? Theme/configurations? Basically, what files apart from configurations in your ~/pranav directory have you touched?

Next, can we please have the output of:

fpaste --sysinfo --printonly

and

rpm -qa \*libre\*

This should fix it, but it doesn’t explain why for a new user, they’re not getting a brand new unmodified libreoffice experience.

It can be uninstalled, carefully.
Before you do that I would recommend you follow earlier suggestions to create the new user and test appearance there.
Each user has their own config for appearance of gnome and apps under their home directory. Starting with a new user allows starting at default configs and you can then see the differences your own user has made to the config.

A reinstall will not wipe out any configs of themes, etc. that you have done and your user will still be stuck with the changes already in effect.

Work from the beginning with a little trouble shooting instead of using the sledge hammer approach.

In fact you can easily revert LO to default config for your user if you rename ~/.config/libreoffice to ~/.config/libreoffice.bak then restart libreoffice and it will be the same as if you had never previously started it and you will be working with the default configs.

This is what has me stumped. They note that they’ve done this, but they still do not get a fresh LO.

So there are pieces of the puzzle missing here.

yes. Bond is the new user. Pranav is the existing use I use every day.
And yes, I used GUI, via GDM to log out from “Pranav” and log in to “Bond”. A default wallpaper appeared, etc. Looked fresh to me.

can we please have the output of:

pranav@fedora ~> fpaste --sysinfo --printonly

Yesterday I had deleted the bond user after when I saw that it didn’t affect LO. Do you want me to recreate that bond user and resend you the output of fpaste by logging in to that user? I can do that too if it’s necessary.

Edit: I had used fpaste command before, but never have I ever experience its output coming after like 40 min. I wonder if it’s normal.

Did you get the “Welcome to Gnome” window etc., which asks you if you want to set up your online accounts and all that? (Deleting a user does not necessarily delete their home folder, so if you don’t delete the home folder and then create the user with the same username later, the same home folder will get used. I.e., you won’t get a fresh environment.)

How about checking it once more with “test” or something, just a username that you haven’t ever used before. We just want to be very sure that a completely new environment gives you the same result

Nothing in the system information looks off. So all that is good.

Looks like it got stuck waiting for user input at:

That tends to happen if you haven’t used dnf as a normal user before. I tend to always use dnf with sudo, and fpaste --sysinfo too, but it isn’t required. (I guess we could tweak fpaste to use -y in all read-only operations so that it doesn’t get stuck there).

The libreoffice packages also look fine. Nothing stands out to me.

How about modifications? What have you changed and how? Themes and all that? How did you install the yaru theme, and did you do it as root?

Can we also have the output of this command please?

tree -L 2 /usr/share/themes

the package that does this kind of … stuff is (I think), GNOME Tour. I have uninstalled that long time ago, along with the preinstalled apps like Cheese, Mines, Sudoko, etc. So, there was no, “Welcome”.

Edit:

wow, that’s a lot of themes. Only theme I remember installing is yaru using sudo dnf install yaru-stuff

pranav@fedora ~> sudo adduser ankur
[sudo] password for pranav:
pranav@fedora ~> sudo passwd ankur

Edit 2:
@ankursinha when I log out and go back to ankur, I still see what I saw in bond user, which is what I saw as pranav user.
