Keyboard Issues with F7, Shift + X, and Other Key Combinations

I’m experiencing several issues with my keyboard:

  1. F7 Key: The F7 key, which is associated with the mute function, is not working correctly. It randomly activates on its own, usually when I’m not using the keyboard, like when I’m watching something, and it mutes the audio automatically.
  2. Shift + X: While both the Shift key and the X key work individually, I’m unable to use them together to type a capital “X.”
  3. Tilde (~) Key: Occasionally, the tilde (~) key starts pressing itself repeatedly without any input from me. This happens even without pressing the Shift key. Both the Shift and tilde keys work fine on their own. Only happens while using VS Code.
  4. Super + 2 Shortcut: I’ve set Super + 2 as a shortcut to open the terminal. However, the combination no longer works, even though both the Super key and the 2 key function individually.

Everything was working fine a few days ago, but these issues have suddenly started. I’ve tried disabling the F7 key using xmodmap, but the problem persists.

Could you please help me find a solution?

My first though is a hardware issue with your keyboard.

Is it a wireless keyboard and is the battery charged?

Try testing with a different keyboard. Does that fix the issue?

It is a laptop keyboard.

If you have an external keyboard plug that into the laptop to do the test.

I tested it with an external keyboard, and everything works fine, so it seems like a hardware issue.

Is there any way I can manually disable the F7 key? I tried using xmodmap, but that didn’t work.

That only works for X11, I’m guessing you are using Wayland.

Is it practical to clean under the keycaps? Might just be grit or fluff in the key mechanism.

Yes I am using Wayland.

I’ll try to clean the keyboard.
