Keyboard Issues on Fedora 41: Random Key Combinations Stop Working (Dell XPS 15 9510)

, ,

Hello Fedora community,

I’m experiencing a frustrating issue with my keyboard on Fedora 41, and I’m hoping someone here might be able to help or point me in the right direction.

Issue Description:

  • Random key combinations stop working, particularly:
    • Shift + [key]
    • Meta + [key]
    • CTRL + [key]
  • Sometimes double taps are registered as well
  • The problem seems completely random with no discernible pattern
  • When it happens (e.g., Shift+[key] does not type anything), I can’t consistently get it working again, but it may suddenly start working without any clear reason

Additional Details:

  • Recently upgraded to Fedora 41, but the issue persists from the previous version
  • Running i3 window manager
  • Laptop: Dell XPS 15 9510

I’ve been unable to find any similar reports or solutions online. Has anyone encountered a similar issue or have any ideas on how to troubleshoot this further?

Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Does it happen when you boot the laptop using live images of either Fedora or other Linux distros? I had an earlier XPS 13 where the keyboard had issues recognizing key presses for a swath of keys. Sometimes, pressing the key registers multiple keypresses. It got more unreliable over the course of several months before I donated it for e-cycling.

This happened with Fedora 38, Pop, Debian and Kubuntu. Obviously, it makes regularly entering a password a little bit difficult, much less everything else.
