Is my display dying, or has anybody else had weird screen behaviour recently?

So I’ve been having some weird screen problems this week on my 9 years old Asus MG279Q desktop screen. GPU is an AMD RX 6900xt, and the system is running F40 KDE with latest updates installed. Kernel 6.10.4 and Mesa 24.1.5

First I was watching a youtube video when I noticed that the screen backlight was flickering at the top row. My first reaction was to think that my screen is dying
Started to play around in the displays OSD settings, witch I haven’t touched in years. Finally turning off freesync made the flicker go away. Turning it off also made the whole wayland session crash. Got back to desktop after some seconds of black screen and was greeted by a crash message. I tried to send it, but it said unable to collect crash information… I turned freesync back on the next day and the flicker hasn’t come back since.

Today, when sitting unattended for a while my screen has turned a bit darker, like on a laptop power saving mode. After moving the mouse it resets to full brightness. This also affects the screens internal blue light filter, witch I keep at maximum setting. Then I need to go to the OSD menu and move the setting one notch down and back up to its place. This has happened twice today.

I have not touched any setting in KDE regarding screen brightness, color, etc. after I got them to a comfortable setting one year ago. But actually did fiddle around with them now as I’m writing this, to see if they work as intended. Turns out the taskbar brightness slider is really jerky and likes to stick to a value if it moves at all.

I’m confused if I’m dealing with an hardware or a software problem at this point?

There have been some issues with AMD GPUs lately, but i’m not certain if they could be related to what you are experiencing.

What you could try is to boot into the 6.9 kernel for a while and see if the issues persist there. The 6.9 kernel should be clear of the AMD issues that have been reported for some systems.
