I see it as equal risk to doing a system upgrade.
The risk is not equal because I bet the upgrading has been tested much more than the downgrading. It is a bit like driving forward and backwards. You are right then about the fact that before the upgrade we should backup everything so that we can reinstall from scratch if needed and that works exactly the same in reverse.
My honest opinion is I would not downgrade or reinstall just because an extension does not work. Like I wrote above, that is the nature of the game with extensions, they are nice to have but they can’t be a must have, because of all the issues.
