How do I install my Brother HL-3040CN Fedora? The printer is accessible by network as srv-printer.kingma and offers LPD and IPP
If the printer supports IPP you should use that. See Should I set up my CUPS Printing to use IPP, LPD or URL?. This is from an Ubuntu forum, but CUPS is used on current mainstream Linux distros.
The printer provides all the configuration details over the network instead of by a some PPD file used by legacy CUPS.
If its a relatively new, last few years, printer then the printer should advertise itself on the network so that its easy to find and add. That’s what I did for my HP network printer.
I found these docs CUPS – Useful Tricks :: Fedora Docs
The step I think I used are at the section " Installation via CUPS web UI":
You can check that using the command avahi-browse -acr
. Of course, this only works if the avahi daemon is installed and enabled.
I’m going to spam my own page here. It’s about a different model of Brother but should still work. https://srobb.net/cliscanprint.html
what is avahi? I just want to print
Thank you.
how do I print on this printer from fedora
It should be detected and work out of the box, at least the Brother printer that i have did which is a similar model. No additional configuration was needed.
Do you have a network (WiFi and/or wired) accessible to the printer and the Fedora system?
Are you using the printer with other systems/OS’s? If so, are you using WiFi or wired network?
With a printer that supports a current form of IPP (e.g., AirPrint or Mopria) and Fedora Workstation 40 or 41, you just connect the printer to your network (with WiFi you may need to use the printer’s configuration tools to set up a WiFi connection) and use Settings/Printers, then select “Add Printer”. You should be able to select your printer and start using it.
If that doesn’t work , you need to provide more details so we can understand which and why the above steps aren’t working for you.
The printer is on LAN accessed over a WLAN. it has a fixed IP and hostname
