If the printer supports IPP you should use that. See Should I set up my CUPS Printing to use IPP, LPD or URL?. This is from an Ubuntu forum, but CUPS is used on current mainstream Linux distros.
The printer provides all the configuration details over the network instead of by a some PPD file used by legacy CUPS.

If its a relatively new, last few years, printer then the printer should advertise itself on the network so that its easy to find and add. That’s what I did for my HP network printer.

You can check that using the command avahi-browse -acr. Of course, this only works if the avahi daemon is installed and enabled.
