How to create a new folder in Files?

I may be having a senior moment, but I could have sworn I have in the past seen a Folder icon with a plus sign next to it, to create a new folder in the currently viewed folder in Files. But I can’t see one now.
I am dumbfounded, looking at a folder full of files and folders, I want to create a new folder but can’t see how! I checked I was drinking any dodgy brands of coffee before posting here, promise!

I looked in the dropdown arrow menu, the ‘hamburger’ menu on left, nowhere can i see ‘create new folder’. tried CTRL-N but that just opens a new window. Maybe someone could either enlighten me, or rescue me from my insanity!
thanks

CTRL+SHIFT+N

I can be wrong, but this is present in the windows you see when you save a file from some applications.

Right click on an empty space.

Added nautilus, workstation

CTRL+SHIFT+n on KDE Plasma too

Thanks, usually there’s a ‘mouse’ way and a KB shortcut. I am overloaded with new KB shortcuts right now so hoped there’d be an option to click on, same goes for an older guy I am helping (blind leading blind!) to start using Fedora instead of Windows.

Right click empty space - I see, I can do that in icon view but I use list view so wasn’t able to find it , i tried right clicking.

Thanks, will have to just remember that, but if my suggestions are worth F.A. - an option in one of the two menus you can bring up in Files windows, wouldn’t be a bad addition!

I never did understand what ‘eyes’ means or expresses. Shock, horror, cynicism, suspicion…, kindly educate me on what the kool kids know

It may vary depending on the context!

[Edit:] in terms of good user interaction i also feel that ‘Create New Folder’ should be an item in the main hamburger menu. It’s one of the primary tasks to perform and hiding it behind a keyboard shortcut and right-click mouse is perhaps a little too advanced. It’s a good candidate for an upstream ticket.

that’s exactly what I said, only much better put

There is another menu: the vertical three dots.

I noticed that one later too yes, i do feel it is a less intuitive place than the main hamburger. In the little dots menu i expect to find mostly small contextual actions like copy/paste location, properties, etc. The ones that are in there right now as well. But larger operations like New Folder feel more intuitive in the main menu.

Another option could perhaps be a small icon next to the ‘Search current folder’ icon:

It is the menu for doing things in the current folder context. And creating a new folder is an operation in that context. The hamburger menu is for settings and other stuff not related to a folder context.

Intuition is just what you have grown used to. Nothing more.

Well not entirely, all of the other actions in the little-dots menu pertain to navigation/information:

  • Open with
  • Reload
  • Edit location
  • Copy location
  • Open in terminal
  • Properties

etc.

They don’t pertain to manipulating the contents of the folder.

Most of the other contextual actions that relate to manipulating a folder are instead in the right-click menu:

So for me the New Folder action doesn’t feel completely at home in the little-dots menu. It’s partly a matter of what i’m used to, but also from a user interaction perspective it feels a bit out of place between the other actions found there.

Ha, didn’t even see that, thanks!

Exactly. What actually confused me was seeing that there IS an icon for that, but only in dialogues when saving a file from a browser or similar. I hoped someone might be able to drop that into ALL Files windows!
