HDMI issues with Fedora 40 and Lenovo Thinkpad 15

Hi!

I’ve searched the web about this issue but didn’t find any suitable solution for my case. Sorry if I’m duplicating the issue.

I have a setup with 3 monitors, my main monitor is a AOC 32" 2560x1440 and 2 Philips 24" 1920x1080. I share the inputs of my AOC with my PC (running Arch Linux with KDE/Plasma) on DP, my MacMini on DVI and my work laptop in HDMI.

I’ve been using an old Toshiba Satellite laptop with Ubuntu / Kubuntu (Plasma 5) without any problems, and have other devices working too when connected to the AOC’s HDMI input.

Now I got a new laptop from work, a Lenovo Thinkpad and, since now Fedora is also an option from our IT, I decided to go with Fedora. It’s Fedora 40 with Plasma 6. The laptop’s graphic chipset is Intel Raptor Lake-P [Iris Xe Graphics].

And here the problems began. I wasn’t able to get any signal on my AOC. On the “display configuration” window I can see it but when I switch to HDMI the laptop’s screen flashes for a bit and I get nothing on the AOC’s screen. I tried to install X11 but it didn’t work too.

Then I tried to use my HDMI-VGA adapter and connect to the VGA input. It worked fine but, of course, no 2560x1440 (QHD) resolution as it is not supported with VGA. Back to HDMI, no signal, AOC’s go back to DP. Changing refresh rates between 60Hz and 75Hz did not make any difference.

Later I tried to connect to the HDMI input of one of my Phillips screens. It worked well with 1920x1080 (FHD). Then I tried something… I changed the HDMI cable on my AOC and… it worked! I thought it was a cable related issue. However, after I returned from lunch the problem returned. Now, even with the VGA input (with the adaptor) the image appears but it’s flickering. I reboot the laptop, disconnect / reconnect the cable, switched off / on the monitor but nothing worked out. Again, I’m unable to get HDMI working on my AOC. I also tried to change the screen resolution to 1920x1080 but didn’t work.

The following image shows the display configuration after I connect the HDMI cable and before I switch the AOC’s input from DP to HDMI:

Screenshot_20240705_141028

After I switch AOC’s input to HDMI, the laptop’s screen flashes and I have this now:

“An output has been removed?”

Here follows my results from the command “inxi -Fzxx”:

Never trust a cable. Some systems are fussy about cables they don’t think are suitable. Can you try another HDMI cable rated for QHD resolution (I find it worthwhile having a spare high-end cable).

Thanks George,

I don’t think it’s a cable related issue. Both cables I have support WQHD resolutions (sorry, not just QHD, it’s WQHD - 2560x1440). When I changed the cables it was just in despair. And even if the second cable started to work for about 1 hour, it’s now useless again. It doesn’t work.

And the fact is, both cables already operated with my monitor and other devices at 2560x1440 without any problems. The first one has been working for some years with my previous laptop without any issue. And it’s a good quality and expensive cable.
So, why now? Why with the new laptop? It makes no sense.

So I believe it might be related to the Intel drivers that come along with Fedora… That’s why I’m asking for help here.

You have Intel Xe graphics. A new Intel Xe driver is being merged. It is possible that the old i915 driver either doesn’t fully support your configuration or needs some configuration options.

It is best if you can ensure that the laptop is fully updated (including firmware) so you aren’t chasing a problem that has been fixed.
In some enterprise environments that may need the help of your IT people. Some organizations may not want users randomly posting
system logs.

It takes time for linux to support new hardware. Intel has provided a new Xe driver, but from the kernel.org merge plan, considerable work is still needed.

Arch wiki Intel graphics discusses a number of i915 configuration issues, with examples of journalctl output. It also mentions the “new experimental Xe” driver.

Try journalctl --no-hostname -b -g i915 on your system to see any of the issues mentioned in the Arch document are present.

If the laptop’s screen is readable, look for details by running journalctl --follow in a terminal window while switching to HDMI. If not, note the time and message when you started journalctl so you can find the window of interest.

journalctl has many options to filter the copious output to just the issue at hand. Posting details here as pre-formatted text will allow others with similar hardware and/or issues to find this topic.

Thanks George for your reply

Well, for the i915 journal, I didn’t find anything suspicious. No errors were reported.

But when I used --follow and switched to HDMI, there is something wrong with plasmashell. I start to wonder if the issue wouldn’t be related with KDE6 / Plasma6…

I replaced the workstation name/domain and user name with other data:
