HDMI Adapter fails to hold display signal

Hey everyone, I have a problem I hope to be able to solve with your help.
I’m using Fedora since around two years now on my laptop, a Lenovo IdeaPad 720s 15IKB.

I’m using an HDMI-Adapter to connect it to an external monitor.
However, since a while now this is not longer possible, as when I plug in the USB-C to HDMI-Adapter in the laptop, it shortly shows an image, before “losing” the connection.

As an example for the problem, see the following video.

This happens with different monitors, but only on this laptop, as I checked with an Dell Latitude and the adapter worked fine there. Also, up until the 5.15.14 kernel it worked on the first try, only failing if you unplugged it and trying to plug it back in.

Checking the logs with journalctl and dsmeg did not turn up any error message what is happening exactly, so I’m not sure where to look to find the problem, which is why I hope you can help me to find the problem so it can be solved.

Following are a bunch of outputs from the terminal.

Hi, from you laptop spec, look like it have Nvidia card. If your system using Nouveau driver, there known issue in the past for multi monitor setup.

If above true (currently using Nouveau driver), first, please check your Gnome setting if the second monitor still detected there. There a user that reported can use multi monitor by set the refresh rate to around 60Hz for external monitor.

If the refresh rate not shown from Gnome setting, try to lowering the resolution for external monitor until it show the refresh rate.

The other consideration, may be you need to install Nvidia driver since Nouveau have struggle on power management part.

I don’t think it’s the nouveau drivers causing the issue, as the nvidia card is deactivated in the BIOS (given that it has died a while back).

I also just tried to actively disable the noveau drivers, using rpm-ostree kargs --append=rd.driver.blacklist=nouveau --append=modprobe.blacklist=nouveau, but it doesn’t resolve this issue.

Hi, if it’s not nouveau, then I believe first you need to report it to bugzilla.redhat.com.

Btw, would you like to check with xrandr if you can get the temporary working second monitor like the video you shared to check weather the second monitor still detected by the system?

Also may be it will helpful if you could post the complete journal to pastebin.com or somewhere like gist.github.com and share the link here.

Created an bug report on RedHat’s Bugzilla. Full log can also be found there.

About the question if the monitor is still detected:
The adapter is still a known device, but Gnome Settings doesn’t detect the monitor after the short period. Can’t quickly check with xrandr as it is not installed on Fedora Silverblue (and I’m also using Wayland primarly).
