Google Chrome freeze each time I open after install on Fedora 42 Workstation

Dear Fedora Community

I have just install Fedora 42 Workstation on my pc. I install Google Chrome and each time I open chrome, my system freeze. Chrome cannot open and mouse keypad are unable to use. I have to restart my system each time. The problem only happen to Chrome. I open Firefox that come with Fedora 42 Workstation, all is fine. The freeze only happen on Chrome.

Can you with experience assist?

Thanks

I have got exactly the same issue. I have tried to reinstall Chrome, clear its cache manually from CLI/terminal, and I have made sure the system is fully up to date. It still happens. It has run successfully maybe 2-3 times only out of several attempts since the issue occurred the first time few weeks back.
As you wrote, the system is completely frozen including mouse and keyboard when I launch Chrome, so there is no way to do anything. Every time I have to use a reset button on the chassis. I confirm, no issue with Firefox.
I have tried both flatpack and package from Google repo. The same thing everytime, so I think something fundamentally changed in the Chrome itself.

@ Grzegorz Witkowski

I got the same issues as you. Initially I though maybe my Fedora 42 Workstation is having problem as I am uninstalling some software I don’t use. Then I tried downloading Debian 13, and try installing Google Chrome and it freeze also after launching, also on ubuntu 25.04, the same thing happen. So in the end, i reinstall Fedora 42 Workstation, and stay with Firefox and Brave for now. Both has been working well without issues. Unless there is solution, I will stay with Brave and Firefox for now :face_exhaling:

I am just surprised that Google has not fixed it for quite a time now if the issue is present accross different distros. Chrome is a major player in the market and now it looks like they are not bothered much with Linux users. :frowning:

Vendors of “unicorn” hardware a less eager to support Linux, so users of such systems have to rely on the Linux community to resolve problems. Neither you nor @qkcgjq have posted hardware and OS version details (e.g, the output from running inxi -Fzxx in a terminal and posted as pre-formatted web searchable text). This may get sympathy as well as help from others with similar hardware and issues, even those using other distros.

My command of terminal is quite limited to just few sudo dnf autoclean, update, upgrade which I can search on the internet. I am clueless of anything higher . Here is the output:

Please look for firmware updates. New Linux kernels often require changes to vendor firmware. Updating ensures that you aren’t wasting energy chasing a solved problem.

To see available firmware updates, do fwupdmgr update. Also check the manufacturer’s website for any BIOS updates, since those are not always made available through the Linux Vendor Firmware Service which fwupdmgr uses.

fwupdmgr update is the correct command.

It shows that the only device you have that gets updates through LVFS is your WD drive, and that it’s already up to date.

You can check the mobo manufacturer’s website for any BIOS updates, though to be honest I don’t think it’s likely those would address your Chrome issues.

@ P G pg-tips

I don’t think my hardware is the problem. Cos I installed Fedora 42 Workstation. Once is before september and everything work well including chrome. Another is around september then chrome freeze each time i open. I don’t know what went wrong. So i try out Debian 13 and Ubuntu 25.04, on both distros, chrome also freeze. I revert back to Fedora 42 Workstation and stick with it. Posting here hope to have any others who can assist to solve the problem.

I think I have the same issue. Chrome was working well until I installed updates yesterday (2025-09-11).

Try Gnome desktop and let me know

Sorry, this is my daily driver. I’m not willing to mess it up by installing extra desktop environments.

I would not assume hardware issue so easily. I have a dual-boot with Win and Chrome works there fine with no problem. There are no any other problems. The hardware is healthy. Something was changed in Chrome for Linux, it is very obvious. This should start with software debugging, I believe.

eric moore metz63

I am on Gnome 48 Wayland desktop. Google Chrome still freeze when I open. Have to restart the pc.

Here is an update on Chrome freeze problem.

I install Fedora Linux 43 (Workstation Edition Prerelease) and install Google Chrome rpm. Everything work fine. No more freezing problem

Thanks for the reminder, I had forgotten that Fedora 43 beta was out! The latest updates on F42 haven’t fixed the Chrome issue for me but I was going to upgrade to F43 beta anyway so I’ll check if that’ll help.

I noticed this thread and gave the -–disable-gpu option a try - it seems to fix the Chrome freeze for me on Fedora KDE Spin 42.
