Google Chrome freeze each time I open after install on Fedora 42 Workstation

@ Marko Haverinen

I am not on KDE so not sure if the –disable-gpu will work or not. Chrome now is working well n Fedora 43 Pre-Release. Went through different distros(Ubuntu 25.04 and Debian13) install just to know if it works but also freeze. Till Fedora 43 Pre-Release, then chrome is able to work.

Thanks

Just upgraded to Fedora KDE Spin 43 Beta. Chrome behaves the same as on Fedora 42 i.e. it works with --disable-gpu but not without it.

Hello, I have just tried the command argument and it has worked on my Chrome and Chromium.

Thanks, GD

My system freezes when I try to start the Brave web browser which I hear is based on Chrome. This happened right after I installed the latest updates on Fedora 42, just this morning, October 1, 2025. Firefox works fine but I prefer Brave. All my bookmarks and cookies are associated with Brave and it will be a pain to bring Firefox up to that level. I guess I won’t bother trying Chrome.

I just tried entering brave-browser —disable-gpu from a terminal window and the system froze, locked up. The mouse wouldn’t move, the keyboard wouldn’t was disabled, the clock stopped. I had to reboot. So much for —disable-gpu. I guess I’ll stick with Firefox until this problem is resolved.

Hi,

You can try Fedora 43 Pre Release. Chrome freeze also after the September updates. I am now on Fedora 43 Pre-Release and Chrome is working well again.

I installed all the latest updates on my Fedora 42 and still the same issue. I tried to launch Chrome from terminal with –disable-gpu and it worked fine. I then tried to disable hardware GPU acceleration under chrome://flags and launch from Gnome and it failed again.

I cannot understand how Devs left one of the most if not the most important desktop application broken for so long.

Hello everyone.

I’ve been using google-chrome-stable on Fedora since version 41 Workstation, upgraded to 42 Workstation, and am now running it on two laptops with Fedora 43 Workstation. I have never experienced any issues with Chrome in any of these Fedora versions.

Regards

I checked to see what the folks at Brave have to say at Brave Browser crashing entire Linux OS - #2 by Denka - Desktop Support - Brave Community . They had quite a lot to say but here is the conclusion “Conclusion

While frustrating, the reality is that aging hardware requires compromises in modern computing environments. The --use-gl=desktop solution provides a stable, working browser without the system instability of forced hardware acceleration or the performance penalty of complete software rendering.“

The —use-gl=desktop worked for me and now I can run Brave again. But I am dismayed at what they have to say about aging hardware as my mother board is 15 years old.

Sorry for late reply. I understand. I tried the MATE Desktop and while not as comprehensive as KDE, it works with Chrome fine. In fact, I had been having problems with power and hibernation with Fedora and KDE Plasma going back several versions of Fedora, and power/hibernation now works on the system I use for my daily driver.

I understand not wanting to try other desktops though.

I understand you are not having a problem but other people may not have your hardware. I have a perfectly fin running Mac Pro 3,1/space heater with NVIDIA Quadro 4000 that is not working under KDE Plasma. I have found that the MATE Desktop works fine so it’s something going on between Chrome and KDE. None of the switches other people mentioned work under KDE Plasma. Shouldn’t discount what people post in this sense. I had a perfectly fine working Mac Pro 3,1 on Fedora 42 until updates were applied by Fedora on Sept 6, 2025.

Strange about Brave. My problem started in KDE Plasma after Fedora did update around Sept 6, 2025. Chrome just wouldn’t load and wouldn’t load the account box even. I have couple of Google accounts and that box that lists the accounts wouldn’t even load.

I was able to get Brave to work. I also experimented with several desktops Gnome ( worked with Chrome ) and MATE ( worked with Chrome ). But COSMIC and KDE - nada. Just Chrome wouldn’t load. I tried the –use-gl=desktop and there is another one to disable the gpu and those switches didn’t work either though they did get a little farther giving menu items in chrome but everything was greyed out and I couldn’t hit the login link/image whatever.

MATE seems to work fine. But no, I don’t want to give up a perfectly working Mac Pro 3,1 and turn it into a landfill object. Not yet anyways.

Hello,
I absolutely did not mean to underestimate the problem. I apologize for my poor English. Could you please try the following command?

rm -rf ~/.config/google-chrome/Singleton*

I tried that when I had the problem initially. One of the first things I tried. And if that was a problem with a lock then Chrome should have also failed in MATE Desktop I would think. That didn’t solve the problem.

Looks like both –use-gl=desktop and –use-gl=egl work for me, but only when I lauch Chrome from the terminal.

–disable-gpu does not work always.

Yes, –use-gl=desktop works from the terminal but when I put it into a .desktop file to install an icon on the desktop it crashed. I don’t understand that.

Still broken. No one seems to care from devs it looks like.

Try Fedora 43 (Workstation Edition). I am on Fedora 42 Workstation Edition when chrome freeze issues happen. I tried Fedora 43 Pre Release and then after all updates, it become Fedora 43 Workstation Edition and all is working fine.

Was on 42. Upgraded to 43. All up to date. Still the same… :frowning:

I went through several iterations of installing 43 with KDE, MATE, Cinnamon and std. Workstation.

KDE is busted. MATE works but lot of video artifacts and lock ups. I like MATE gave me a mid-90s Unix workstation vibe. Sort of. I could not get any of those to install from 43 USB drives. I had the install to hard drive open the initial window and crash.

I did get Fedora 43 Cinnamon to load Fedora 43 and it is working with Google Chrome. That’s what I’m running right now as I enter this message.
