I have got exactly the same issue. I have tried to reinstall Chrome, clear its cache manually from CLI/terminal, and I have made sure the system is fully up to date. It still happens. It has run successfully maybe 2-3 times only out of several attempts since the issue occurred the first time few weeks back.
As you wrote, the system is completely frozen including mouse and keyboard when I launch Chrome, so there is no way to do anything. Every time I have to use a reset button on the chassis. I confirm, no issue with Firefox.
I have tried both flatpack and package from Google repo. The same thing everytime, so I think something fundamentally changed in the Chrome itself.
