I am restarting one of my hobbies; music arraigning and composing. I am also getting ready to switch from F33 to F34. I am currently using mscore software and a c-media oxygen sound card with F33. This sound card works, but they are not available anymore. I got the C-media card because it was listed on the site for Rosegarden software which I’m not using anymore. I will be setting up a new PC for music when F34 is out so I need to buy another sound card. I want to keep the Oxygen card in the PC it is in. Back before I started using Fedora I used Sound Blaster sound cards by Creative Labs. I’m thinking about getting a Sound Blaster Audigy FX. I’d like to find out if there is any experience using these with Fedora. If not any recommendations would be welcome.
I remember Asus Xonar DX being better than what Creative offered, but I don’t know how it looks, or rather sounds , with newer models. They worked on linux without issues.
A side note on what’s coming with F34: Changes/DefaultPipeWire - Fedora Project Wiki
Thanks.
Over time I’ve tried a few different sound cards. One thing I noticed is that they handle sound fonts differently with very noticeably different rendering of some instruments. I guess I’ll see how things sound with the new PCs on the mother board sound. If I don’t like it I will just have to buy a sound board and see how it goes.
I don’t think pipewire does anything to modify sound fonts. I believe the differences I’ve heard between different sound boards are due to how the different synthesizers interpret the sound font.
