Hello a new-ish fedora user but an experienced Linux user here.
I have encountered an error with my touchpad and after trying everything I found on the internet i come to you.
I originally installed fedora on this laptop (asus R510J) about 4-5 months ago. After an update to kernel 6.1.6 it started randomly disconnecting after a logoff, later it just stopped working. Coming from arch Linux my first instinct was to wait and update but both 6.1.7 and 6.1.8 haven’t fixed the problem.
At some point in the 2 months since the problem began showing itself i tried to change my GNOME session to xorg (i have and NVIDIA 950m graphics card and i know how bad Wayland can be on these), but xorg just didn’t work (blank screen) i think this is a separate issue but i am not fixing that one before the touchpad.
I also tried to install the module by itself sudo modprobe synaptics because I thought that this was the driver but later found out i have a focaltech.
I tried to check if the connector (ribbon cable inside the laptop) is broken but after disassembling the computer I found it in perfect shape and fully sited in.
Today i even tried to just boot up an installer of another distro. I tried pop!_os 22.04, openSUSE Leap 15.4 and the fedora installer with the issue persisting.
I concluded that there are a few possibilities:
- The kernel of the above mentioned distros has the option to enable this driver disabled by default or,
- My touchpad is broken.
Possible ways of checking which one of these is correct thought of whilst writing this topic:
- Booting up windows and checking there (but I would not want to install windows on this laptop)
- Making a custom kernel with the driver
- Making a configuration change that I haven’t tried (but any possible change that MIGHT fix the touchpad is welcome)
