At first I thought this was a total system freeze, but it does not appear that way now.
After a recent system update(sudo dnf update), the Gnome desktop freezes/locks up randomly.
There is no pattern I can find. Sometime is freezes right after login, other times it might run for several hours with no issues. Sometimes with no applications running, other times I can run many different application before it freezes.
When it freezes the display, keyboard and mouse are completely locked. The display is frozen, sometimes in the middle of an animation. There is no way to have any control/input on the local system.
At first, the only thing I could do was reboot the system.
I enabled SSH as a test. When frozen, the system is still active and I can interact with it via SSH from another system. But nothing local.
In my ssh session, I can run gnome-shell --replace to restart the desktop. No active windows remain after logging back in.
However, once I have the problem, it normally freezes again with a minute.
I find it interesting that, as far as I am aware, there were no Gnome updates, just the kernel updates. But Gnome is affected.
I’m going to switch to xorg instead of Wayland and test for a few days as well.
Looking for any troubleshooting/debugging suggestions or ideas.
