Hello all,
I’m having some trouble getting Fedora 42 (KDE Plasma Desktop) to run on my system. My old Asus G751JY is getting left behind by the Win 10 to 11 push and I thought now would be a good time to get into Linux.
These are my machine’s specs:
- Processor: Intel(R) Core™ i7-4870HQ CPU @ 2.50GHz 2.49 GHz
- Installed RAM: 16.0 GB
- Storage: 477 GB SSD SAMSUNG MZHPU512HCGL-00005, 932 GB HDD HGST HTS721010A9E630
- Graphics Card: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 980M (4 GB)
- System Type: 64-bit operating system, x64-based processor
I had a dual boot Ubuntu system installed for a while earlier in college for some programming classes, but this install is proving to be more difficult than I anticipated. I used a live media mounted on a USB stick using Rufus (I tried the Fedora Media Writer tool first but then the media could not pass the test during first boot). Other than that, I’m pretty much stuck. I don’t really know how to generate a log to share, but I can see that the first boot is partially successful. It passes the first loading screen (not entirely maybe?) and I even get a welcome sound, but then the machine will always power down on its own and I’m back to the first boot screen if I power on again. I know NVIDIA graphics drivers can be an issue, and I’ve tried the common blacklist solutions explained in other threads:
rd.driver.blacklist=nouveau
modprobe.blacklist=nouveau
nomodeset
This did not solve the problem.
As I’ve said, I don’t have a log of the first boot but I do have some pictures I took of the screen (all I could get was the final screen before shutdown):
Any help you can give me is appreciated. Sorry for the long post and if I’m missing some important info, this is my first post on this community and I only have basic programming literacy.
Thanks!
