Fedora 40, kernel 6.9.9, won't resume from suspend with the latest nvidia drivers

Hello, everyone!

Anyone else encountering this issue when the computer won’t resume from suspend? Pressing the power button results in a black screen, although there is power going through the system (gpu lights et alia are on).

Before coming here for help, I tried various other solutions (switching to a different os, manually installing the latest nvidia drivers from their site, including the beta versions, reinstalling fedora, removing the gpu – which was the only solution to get suspend to work).

Also, enabling the nvidia suspend and resume services (disabled by default) hinders the boot process (black screen), while restarting the said services also results in black screen.

There is now kernel 6.9.10 in the repo.
You also appear to not have updated the nvidia driver recently since it has been at version 555.58.04 for some time in the rpmfusion repo.

This repo often gives errors, and is for f39, not f40
I would suggest that you disable the cuda-fedora repo and only use packages from rpmfusion.
sudo dnf config-manager --disable cuda-fedora39-x86_64 will handle that error

Also, if you wouldn’t mind giving me some advice, isn’t sudo dnf update && sudo dnf upgrade the correct way to keep fedora up do date? Or is there more? :slight_smile:

I did some research on fedora before switching distros, but it appears some more reading is still required. Where do you suggest I should start?

Those commands are the same in Fedora. . . I recall that update/upgrade being a Debian/Ubuntu/Mint nomenclature though. . . I’m hoping Fedora removes upgrade when we move to dnf5.

dnf update will keep your system up to date, dnf distro-sync will get you completely in sync with all fedora packages. Useful for when thngs go awry .

This is all from the cuda-fedora repo and IMHO should be wiped out and reinstalled from rpmfusion.
Those steps should be very easy.

  1. sudo dnf remove \*nvidia\* --exclude nvidia-gpu-firmware
  2. sudo dnf install akmod-nvidia xorg-x11-drv-nvidia-cuda
  3. wait at least 5 minutes then reboot.

Those 3 steps should remove the older drivers, install the latest drivers, and make them active with the reboot.

If there is an error with the installation in step 2 due to modular problems the command
sudo dnf module disable nvidia-driver then repeating step 2 should fix that.

Those commands are identical. As I recall ‘dnf update’ is an alias for ‘dnf upgrade’ so when using it the way you show you repeat the exact same command twice and the second time will return a “nothing to do” response.

Ubuntu separates them, apparently to allow the user to view what is being updated and uses 2 separate commands. I believe “apt upgrade” defaults to a Y response.

Fedora pauses the dnf upgrade and displays the list to wait for the user to approve the upgrade before continuing, using only one command and a Y or N response (defaults to N).

Still no joy. But at least now I get a (fairly incomprehensible) error message when it tries to resume from sleep (which Arch Linux also threw at me), so the screen is not black any more (“Unable to access opcode bytes at 0xfffff etc.”).

This looks like an rtkit-daemon problem and not necessarily related to nvidia. The imsettings-daemon appears to be launching the rtkit-daemon which then fails.

Nothing there indicates an nvidia issue and nvidia-smi seems to indicate the driver is working properly.

A quick search for rtkit daemon provides several links that may assist. (It may be related to either alacritty or firefox)

Wow.

Funniest thing happened: switched to the oldest kernel I had available, 6.5.8, then lo and behold, suspend now works! Am afraid to switch back to the newest kernel :D.

Another think, it may be relevant: Firefox was not available from dmenu after I switched, I had to launch it from the terminal. So your hunch about Firefox might be true.

Edit: problem still persists on the new kernel.

Any ideas how to actually run this? I’m hoping that the open drivers might work better.

I’m guessing it will be a while before the new drivers make it into the rpm?

Fedora has deprecated modular use for the last few releases and even removed the earlier available modular repos.

I would never suggest doing that command. It would only work when using an nvidia repo such as cuda-fedoraXX anyway so is also not recommended.

I only suggest installing the drivers from rpmfusion which is rpm and not modular. See my earlier post on this issue.

In your opinion, do you think the new drivers will eventually be incorporated into the kernel? Will they make it to the fedora repos in a reasonable amount of time?

If you know that kernel works, make sure you keep it around. The oldest kernel is the next one out. . .

At present the nvidia drivers are proprietary and will never be distributed by fedora as such.
There is in progress work on an open source driver (NVK) that may support (only) the newer nvidia GPUs which then might be distributed by fedora.

You could follow that progress if you wish.
