F42 CommOps cohort: Open rally to start contributing this release cycle

Hi commops-team! I am starting this topic to make an open rally for folks who want to contribute and get involved with the Community Ops (CommOps) team during our current Fedora Linux 42 release cycle (from ~13 August 2024 to ~22 April 2025[1]). I am using this Discussion thread to “read the room” of folks who want to help out with CommOps and how they would like to help out.

How to participate?

This is like open recruitment! You want to get involved with CommOps as a Fedora Linux 42 contributor? This is the first place to begin. Raise your hand, and let’s get to know each other as we move ahead on the Fedora Linux 42 release cycle :rocket:

Here is what I am asking you to do:

  1. Review the list of F42 contribution areas below.
  2. Reply to this topic with the following information:
    • Preferred name / pronouns
    • 2-3 sentences about you personally and/or professionally
    • Which F42 contribution areas interest you and why

We will use this Fedora Discussion topic as a way for new contributors during the remainder of the release cycle to say hello, introduce themselves, and get support on getting started.

F42 contribution areas

The Fedora Community Operations Team provides tools, resources, and utilities for different sub-projects of Fedora to improve effective communication. See our goals and objectives. These are some of the focus areas we are considering for the remainder of the F42 release cycle:

  • Work closely with Fedora Community Architect to prioritize key focus areas
  • Work with sub-projects and teams to improve on-boarding methods and practices
    • Pairing with @jflory7 to refactor and reorganize CommOps docs
    • Writing a CommOps contributor handbook
    • Pairing with @jflory7 and @amoloney on F42 release virtual event
  • Use metrics and data to improve understanding of Fedora community
    • Pairing with @rwright on the Fedora Data Accessibility project
    • Model activities and patterns of the Fedora community during the current release cycle

There is room for other things not listed here, so if you see something else in CommOps that you want to work on, do not hesitate to share a link here and ask about it.

  1. Seems a little late, right? The F42 release cycle started months ago! The truth is, I took inspiration from this discussion to think about more direct ways to onboard new contributors in an organized, consistent way. ↩︎

Maybe it is awkward, but I will make a first reply to my own topic with an example introduction, since it is the first time I am trying this!

  1. My name is Justin (he/him) but I often go by JWW, JWF, or jflory7.
  2. I started contributing to Fedora in 2015 with the CommOps and DEI teams. Today, I work at Red Hat as the Fedora Community Architect, working to support the needs and goals of our community :raised_hands:
  3. I am most interested, selfishly, in my own focus areas: refactoring the CommOps docs, working on the F42 release virtual event, and maybe some early brainstorming on a CommOps contributor handbook. These are the projects getting most of my focus now, so it would be easier for me to help mentor or guide someone on how to contribute with these focus areas!

My name is Steve (he/him) and I usually go by the moniker ‘Farchord’.

I started contributing in Fedora around 2022 give or take, and I’m a proud member of the KDE sig, and also a moderator on the #fedora:fedoraproject.org matrix channel as well as generally get rid of spam in matrix.

I am what you would call a 100% pure computer addict, through and through. Love helping in side projects (such as Fedora) in my free time.

We never had a good home for our community moderation work, but CommOps would be a welcome home for this sort of thing. Community moderation is huge, and it is an important part of keeping our communities safe, inclusive, and collaborative.

Thanks for your work you do as a moderator!

  2. I began contributing to Fedora in 2020 or so, having been an Enterprise Linux user professionally for a while. I work at CIQ in the Open Source Program Office where I largely focus on Rocky Linux and spend time on various upstream projects, like Fedora!
  3. I’m interested particularly in the Contributor handbook as it’s something I’ve discussed with the team in the past, but as usual I’m around to help with whatever needs doing

Thanks for putting this together, Justin! I’m super excited about seeing where we can take this all.

Thank you @jflory7 for kicking off this thread!

  1. My name is Robert Wright (he/him)
  2. My day job is the leader of the consulting arm of the company I’m at focusing on devising and implementing stategies for risk and compliance programs at financial insituations. In Fedora, I mostly contribute in CommOps with data (we <3 data) and I hang out in Fedora Pride quite a bit.
  3. I plan to work to continue to enable Fedora community members to embrace our data to understand ourselves to help us grow. There is a curious point where we also have to take data as not fact but as a guide to inform us in our decisions - like a compass - to know it’s we’re headed in the right way or need to change course.

Hello! I’m Adrian (he/him). I was an Fedora Community Architect Intern this past summer and did a fair amount of random scripting and documentation work within commops over that time. I probably can’t commit to any particular goals for F42, but I will be working a lot more closely with the Augur/8knot projects and generally doing metrics work for various open source communities, so I’ll try and get involved if there’s any useful overlap between commops and my work on metrics tooling that begins this summer.

  1. My name is Shawn Dunn, I most often go by SFalken or SFaulken
  2. I’m primarily an openSUSE guy, the lead developer of openSUSE Kalpa, one of the LXQt maintainers, and a current member of the openSUSE Board. I’m not super involved in Fedora Development, but I am a moderator on the Fedora Matrix Homeserver, since I do the same for openSUSE, and had a little extra time to pitch in. I do have a fair bit of Fedora Experience, way back in the past, around the FC13 days, working on Fuduntu. I also had Neal put a gun to my head, and make me help out with the LXQt SIG.
  3. At the moment, my only direct involvement in F42 is LXQt, and trying to make sure that the new Wayland sessions are giving the end users a good experience.

I am Mat H ‘Mat’.
I have worked as an IT support person with academics, and as a Volunteer Coordinator at a global NGO and as a Communication Officer at a Political Party. I have done other things as well, you might calI me a jack-of-all-trades. Over the years I have put on events and conferences. I am good at keeping people on board and at identifying strengths and weaknesses. My super-power is using basic math to look deep into the heart of society.
I use Fedora on all my computers and servers. The only proprietary software I purchase is DRM free games. All 300 of them are a bit boring so I play Linux now. I learn a lot by contributing to ‘ask Fedora’.
I’m a little up in the air as to how I would like to support CommOps. As I have to move half way around the world this year. It will however put me near Flock 2025, where I am looking forward to meeting people in person. I like talking about and analyzing programs, but I’m also happy to do grunt-work short term. If anyone want help with an area or wants to discuss ideas before they go live I would like that.

F42 Contribution Areas of Interest:

This might not be the right place, but here goes…

Hi all, I’m Emma (it/its) (matrix:u/emma:rory.gay), you might’ve seen me hang around some of the Matrix rooms before. I’m a FOSS software developer by day, moderator by night. I’m not directly involved in Fedora as a project, but focus on reducing spam in chat (ping me!) and providing services (ie. draupnir :p).

Besides this, I also write quite a bit of Matrix tooling and contribute to related projects.

Hit me up on Matrix if you want to have a chat
