Delta rpms: wasted?

Hi there,

I am just wondering if I need to be concerned about this message, is this clearing out old dependency files or something that doesn’t seem to matter.

The deltarpm “bytes wasted” message, definitely nothing to be concerned about. That’s just a consequence of having to re-download a full RPM for a package that the delta rebuild failed for. That’s the significance of this message:

What that means is that the contents of the kernel-modules package for the previous RPM (meaning, the contents of /lib/modules/5.17.9-300.fc36.x86_64/) didn’t match what was expected. There could be all sorts of reasons for that, depending if you installed any other kernel modules packages, had been running F36 beta before installing the final build, whether or not you even have a /lib/modules/5.17.9-300.fc36.x86_64/ at all, etc…

But the checksum process did its job, flagged the discrepancy, and downloaded the entire RPM for the new kernel-modules. Nothing to worry about, and it’s a pretty rare occurrence. (Or, should be. if delta rebuild failures happen a lot on your machine then that’s worth investigating. But, once in a while is normal.)

Rebuild failures, and the bandwidth they waste, are one of several reasons I’m not real big on deltarpms.

Yes thats correct, I was running the beta version of F36, so that seems to explain why it needed to redownload them. The package manager is very fast now
