Can't boot when I use the latest kernal version of Fedora 42

Hi all,

I’m a pretty new Linux user and recently installed Fedora 42 KDE Plasma which worked fine for the past couple weeks up until a couple days ago where after I input the encryption password on my HD it will just go to a black screen. I do have a basic work around where I can use the GRUB version switcher to go from 6.15.8-200 to 6.15.7-200 instead, I can boot just fine.

Apologies is this is an incredibly simple question, but having searched around I couldn’t really find an answer myself.

Below are my system specs:

Operating System: Fedora Linux 42
KDE Plasma Version: 6.4.3
KDE Frameworks Version: 6.16.0
Qt Version: 6.9.1
Kernel Version: 6.15.7-200.fc42.x86_64 (64-bit)
Graphics Platform: Wayland
Processors: 16 × 11th Gen Intel® Core™ i7-11700 @ 2.50GHz
Memory: 32 GiB of RAM (31.1 GiB usable)
Graphics Processor 1: Intel® Graphics
Graphics Processor 2: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060 Ti
Manufacturer: ASUS

  1. If you hit Escape at this point, do you see messages on screen?

  2. Are you using the proprietary Nvidia drivers? If so, then when you update the kernel, it takes a short time for the Nvidia kernel module to be rebuilt for the new kernel version. It can take a few minutes, but probably only a minute or two on your fairly modern i7.
Now, If you rebooted straight after the kernel update, the module rebuild might not have had time to complete - in which case, the system will try to rebuild the module on the next reboot. That can involve a couple of minutes of blackscreen. Have you tried waiting a couple of minutes to see if the boot proceeds?

Ah that was almost certainly the problem. I just had a go restarting now and it instantly booted normally and it was working fine on the latest kernal. I knew it was going to be something incredibly stupid and obvious

I appreciate your help.
