Booting from USB failing

Hi,

in the past I often got the problem, that USB drives with a Fedora image won’t boot, but other linux distributions from the same stick did.
The same with my current device. Microsoft Surface Go 1.

The only error message I get is after “checking media” a very short message: “failed”.
After this I tried different USB-sticks from different brands and connection types. Nothing worked. I even burned a DVD with Fedora on it. Did not work either.

OpenSuse, Manjaro and Ubuntu are working like a breeze on the same USB stick. Since I do not want to use OpenSuse, Manjaro or Ubuntu, I’d like to know where the problem might be.

Is there anybody with an idea?

Thanks a lot.

Kind regards
Marcus

Just to be clear: Is “failed” the response to “checking media”, or is the check “OK” and then the next response “failed”?
In the first case: Have you downloaded one image and written that same image to several targets? I vaguely remember the check failing for specific reasons, so have you tried booting without the check?

Hi,

this happens so fast, that I can’t really see if there is an ok. I even downloaded the image multiple times. (KDE spin)

How can I boot without this check?

When I create a USB with a fedora ISO i follow these steps and have never had a failure.

  1. download the ISO
  2. verify the ISO with the provided CHECKSUM file
  3. write the ISO to usb with mediawriter (which verifies the USB as well)
  4. boot from the USB and perform the installation.
Note that I do not use the middle option of booting which performs another verification but occasionally fails as noted below.

I also NEVER connect that usb to a windows machine while the windows OS is running because it seems windows writes to the USB which then is certain to fail the verification during boot.

Hi,

thanks for your help.

I did all the above (again) and no other output.

To be clear, I do not even see any boot menu. In the UEFI Settings I chose to start from USB first and PXE is disabled. But I get always the PXE boot option after I try to boot from usb. Since openSuse and other distros were able to boot into the installer or the live system, it might be a “problem” with Fedora.
After searching the web, maybe the surface devices are not able to be run with Fedora. (see other posts here with various surface devices.
