Boot issue : stuck in a blue screen "Boot Option Restoration" loop

Hello,

Some time ago, I installed on the internal SSD in my desktop Fedora 42 KDE Plasma as the only OS.

Yesterday, by mistake, I removed GRUB.

Result : when I rebooted, a blue screen “Boot Option Restoration” appeared :

I tried the options in there, but nothing happened. In order to solve the problem I enabled “Fast Boot” (why ???) but then, rebooting, this same screen came back and back again. Then I tried to use Rescuezilla and then I tried to boot from my Fedora live USB, but no result at all : I could not have access to the UEFI setup !

So, my PC is dead now.

Can you, please, advise me how to solve this problem ?

If so, please present your solution step-by-step : I am not an expert.

Anyway, thanks in advance for your reply.

Kind regards.

Turn off PC

Press power button to turn on PC and press immediately esc button to enter your uefi/bios

Once your enter uefi go to boot option you will see fedora select it and press enter

You will boot your fedora

Now open terminal and do sudo dnf reinstall shim-* grub2-efi-* grub2-common

After that do sudo grub2-mkconfig -o /etc/grub2.cfg

Reboot

How would this work without grub installed? Without a grub configuration, what is it that would bootstrap the initramfs and load the kernel?

What model of computer are you using? Some of these UEFI behaviours can be manufacturer-specific.

If it’s a laptop, find the ‘reset’ button to reset the BIOS.
If it’s a desktop, clear the CMOS with the jumpers and a bit of metal, or remove the CMOS button battery for 30 seconds to clear the BIOS and reboot.

Enter BIOS.

Hello,

My PC is a desktop specially composed for me :

  • Asrock A520M Mainboard (AM4) - HDV
  • AMD Ryzen 4600G met cooler
  • 16 GB DDR4-3200 (2x8 GB kit Crucial)
  • 512 GB NVMe -Kingston KC3000.

Best regards.

Repeatedly hitting F2 when after turning the machine on should send you into the BIOS.

If you have a Live USB plugged in you can also hit F11 to enter the Boot selector and you should be able to see the USB device in that menu.

If neither of these work, then you likely have a bricked motherboard and will need to get busy with recovering from the backup BIOS - your manual should show you how to do this, but I’ve found that the backup BIOS is as likely to fail as to work.

Hello,

Thanks for your reply, but it does’nt work.

The famous blue screen continues to show up, disappears and comes back ….. !

What to do ?

Hello,

Thanks for your reply.

I tried both solutions, but no success at all !

Take the SSD out and boot the pc to the bios

As Matt says, remove all hard-drives (i.e. give it nothing to boot from at all). It should drop to BIOS anyway at that point, as there’s nothing else it can do.

If it’s still knackered, it’s pulling the CR2032 battery and potentially a BIOS recovery.

Or put in another hard drive with a working grub.
