Battery drain only when gaming

Hey everyone! I installed Fedora 39 a week or so ago and everthing has been great. I am having an interesting issue where when I play a steam game (Eldenring) using discrete graphics mode the battery slowly drains. whe I finished playing after two hours my battery was down to 25%. This only happens while gaming. In the last 20 minutes I am back up to 38%. Any ideas on why this is happening? I am running Fedora 39 w/ gnome using the “Nvidia Linux Graphics Driver” version 535.129.03 from rpm fusion.

This is on my Alienware m15 R5 laptop using the stock charger. Issue does appear to be Fedora specific.

Appreciate any support on this!

Thanks,
Devon

This actually sounds like an under-powered charger that is not able to provide enough power to maintain the battery under heavy load. Steam games are both CPU and GPU intensive and demand the utmost from the power supply. if it is under-rated this can occur.

Thanks Jeff! I am trying to figure out where Fedora regulated the resource allocation. This battery drain issue has not been present on the same hardware running Windows 11 or Ubuntu 22-23.04. Something I noticed only on Fedora.

Just a little bump, anyone has any ideas?

I had a similar problem with a laptop that my company supplied.
After complaining to IT they provided a higher rated charger and that fix the issue for me.

Its not clear from the Dell site, but it seems there are 180W and 240W chargers for your laptop. Which do you have?

Its a 240w. I am not complaining but i think Fedora is allowing my components to work at max power. It is just weird I didnt have this issue with Windows 11 or Ubuntu.
