After doing the latest Fed 41 update, upon “Start” (the next day) after shut down (the day before) I only get a dark screen, with NO OPTIONS or information, no login possibility, NOTHING.
Is it possible to access the system somehow?
Please give us more information about your system. Which eddition/spin are you using? Do you have a Nvidia GPU?
Normally you can press Esc while booting and then you get a boot menu. So you can test older Kernels and or start the rescue mode.
Hi, it’s a ASUS N 751J Dual boot with Windows 10. there are 2 1,000GB Hard disks, one for each system, Windows 10 / Fedora 41, as of yesterday. Before the New install of Fed 41, I was running Fed. 40, with no problems. Already after the Install, and reboot, there were some funny reactions from the Terminal as I was attempting to add the additional updates to the Fed.41, as recommended. The Terminal was not the “usual” black background. There was only the outer frame from the Terminal and instead of the Black background, the field was transparent, so as to see the Screen protector image. I also had several Terminal images at the same time. After several fails of unsuccessfully completing the follow up updates, I shut the system down. That was yesterday. I believe there is a NVIDIA GPU because when I do DNF upgrade / DNF update, I see NVIDIA in the software to be installed. I will try to press Esc at the next startup. I am using another Laptop to communicate all this info.
So by startup, I pressed Esc and get GRUN version 2.12… Minimal BASH-like line editing is supported. For thefirst word, TAB lists possible command coompletions. Anywhere els TAB lists possibledeviceor filecompletions. To enable less (1) -likepaging, “set pager=1” grub>
So how can we go further… please… I’ll wait for a reply. I will turn the laptop off in the meantime, as it might be awhile before you reply… First I’ll wait about 10 min. before shutting down.
Have you tested this? ups … it looks like.
Just use arrow up and down to select and enter after selecting. That’s it.
Hi, NEW SITUATION, I started the Laptop and now the Fed 41 started as usual. The problem now seems to be with the Terminal. It still has the see through / transparent field, with just the normal Terminal Frame on the outside. If I try to move the Terminal on the Display to another position, by dragging it with the mouse, all of a sudden there are multiple screens, which was also happening yesterday. This makes it difficult / impossible to use the Terminal.
I just open a Libre New document to see if this behaves like the Terminal, it does NOT, I can drag it on the display and it behaves normally, just one image, can be placed wherever I want it.
So now the question is, how to correct the Terminal problem?
Any suggestions as to correct this?
I have not entered dnf upgrade today, so I don’t know if there is something in the new updates that may have an effect with the Terminal. If I try to do a dnf update, the text is not readable because it is shown over anything else on the display, making it impossible to read. The Black field of the terminal is missing so the text is difficult to read, clearly / correctly.
Patiently waiting… Thanks
Fedora 41 is using a different terminal now. Are you using this? Or are you still on gnome-terminal?
I just gave in GNOME and clicked on Terminal and it is TRANSPARENT.
How can I get to the NEW / WORKING Terminal for Fed.41 ?
Please check if this fix is working.
Thanks to all, the system is working and it seems to be okay at this time.
Thank you for all your support.
Others may benefit if you add a line telling us what you did to fix the issue.
Hi George, that’s the funny thing about this whole problem. First there was just the dark blue, (not black) screen for a long time. With no visible options to chose, (I didn’t realize at that time to hit Esc.)
Then I turned the Laptop off. Then there was the tip, press Esc by the next startup. I did that and got the GRUB Version 2.12 screen.
After about 20 min. I shut the Laptop down again. Then I started it up once again and all of a sudden the “normal Fedora” page was on the screen and it went into the normal START sequence.
The only problem was that the Terminal was from the old Fed version, of which I knew nothing about the NEW Terminal for FEd 41. So I switched from Terminal to Konsole, did all the new updates
and now everything seems to be okay.
I am relieved that it wasn’t more complicated than how it turned out in the end.
Again, thanks to all for feedback and support.
Best greetings,
Magic
Above I asked you which Edition/Spin you are using. You not answered. With hostnamectl
you can see what you have. Under “Operating System:”
I refereed to the Workstation when I said that gnome-terminal is not the actual anymore.
The new terminal calls:
Ptyxis is a terminal for GNOME that focuses on ease-of-use in a world of containers.
You are writing about Konsole what is KDE normally?!
You seem to have the nvidia driver & GPU so this delay was likely waiting for the new driver to be properly built for the newer kernel.
I suspect that had you waited for some time (3 to 5 minutes) before doing anything else that the next boot would have worked properly.
Hi Jeff, I did wait some time, don’t remember now but at some point I thought it was too long, especially after the “reboot” after the install went okay the day before, with a much shorter time.
Maybe we will never know.
Again thanks for the support, you guys are doing a great job of keeping us beginners operational, with all the thousands of problems that come up everyday.
Take care,
Magic
There should be many hints, such as the time and date on the nvidia modules, but a definitive answer may require journalctl
. If you can find some time, treat this as an exercise in learning how to use journalctl
“filters”.
Hi George, you’ve wakened my curiosity about the journalctl. I’m not tech savvy but curious. I entered sudo journalctl and got some logs… 1-35, but I don’t know how to go further, it stops at Oct. 13. Lines 1-35. If you have the time and inclination to help me, go further, that would be a great help. if not, I would understand. We are probably different time zones so it’ll be a while before I go any further today, more like tomorrow.
Thanks!
Sincerely,
Magic
